Is there any trick to removing the drive clutch on these 90 2-strokes? Is it left-hand threaded?

Impact works best to get the nut off and on. Then i cover it with a cloth and tap light with a rubber hammer to pull the clutch off.

Regular threaded?

Yea they are regular right hand threads, 17mm socket (24mm if it has the big nut) and an air or electric impact. Hold the bell with one hand and zip the nut off.

Hmmm, I think ours has a 14mm nut? I'm talking about the drive clutch.

Or you can go the low budget way and use a strap wrench and a socket.

Little bit more of a pain but it works.

Well I got a new impact wrench today and it won't budge the variator nut. How do I hold the clutch in place so I can put some leverage on the nut with a pipe? Strap wrench won't hold it tight enough.

i use a piston stop to hold the piston and remove the nut with wrench not an impact.

Wow,

That thing must be rusted to the crank. Never heard of an impact not getting it off.

Yea no kiddin, I have never had one that tight, I always either use my 3/8 air impact or my 3/8 cordless impact and hold the variator with my other hand. you would have to be careful, but try using a small propane torch and get a little heat on the nut, then try the impact, just don't get carried away with the heat.
