rear shock question

What makes a rear end long travel? Do you have to change anything or is it merely a longer shock

I think it's different linkage that makes it long travel plus a longer shock.

To make your rear end "long travel" you just buy a after market linkage and have your rear shock revalved.

I figured it may be linkage.I haven't seen to many links for sale anywhere.
