u take the cap where you put the oil in off. then make sure you put some buckets underneath ur drain bolts and drain the 17mm one and the 8mm one, then plug em up once they are drained and take your oil filter cover off, some more oil comes out so beware, then put some oiil on the black ring, and stick it back in, then put, 1.20 liters of oil in. thats how i do it anyway, read the manual, it has step by step instructions...

Judging by this and and your other post it sounds like you should invest in a service manual. It tells you how to do everything you ever could need to do and has pictures to help you along. You can get one at your kawi dealer or you could try to find a downloadable version online.

keep that 8mm bolt in there.. It strips very easy and is a hard fix. I know other riders do this and i believe there is other posts on here about it. It will be only a little oil left but not enough to hurt in my opinion

Also, depending on how frequently you change your oil, your bikes oil shouldnt be that dirty.

I change mine after about every 3 or 4 trail rides and after every race

I wasnt calling out or anything, im just saying that people who change their oil regularly shouldnt worry about that little bit of dirty oil that is left in the engine.

what kind of oil do you guys recommend for a beginner racer/trail rider, over 5000 feet elevation.

Ive always suggested Rotella oil, i believe its a 10w-40 fully synthetic. Its cheap and a great oil! You can get it at walmart and shell stations due to it being owned by Shell

They also have a non synthetic oil. But I believe what your mechanic is referencing, with full synthetic car motor oil, is the friction modifiers because we have a wet clutch in the off road segment. But Rotella doesnt have these friction modifiers that make the clutch slip. It has been posted in this forum, someone using rotella compared to another motorcycle specific oil and him feeling it performed better with his shifts, a tighter and more crisp shift.
