noob question here... my chain keeps falling off my R. i asked the last owner what the deal was and he said it just needed to be tightened. how do i do this?? or do i need a new chain? if so whats the best one you have found for the 250r?

thanks

loosen the 2 or 4 bolts(depends on the year) on the very back of the swingarm, put a strong piece of metal such as a thick allen wrench into the slots on the bearing carrier and i believe it is push towards the front to loosen and pull down to tighten

general rule is 2 or 3 finger rule, you should have 2 fingers between the swingarm and chain, just a little bit of play, and not too tight

hope that makes sense

honda 250r- whats a clymer?

250r rider- mine is a 86. where are the slots you talk about? a pic is alway nice.

and do you mean 2 fingers from the top of swingarm to bottom of chain? and is the chain relaxed when doing this? or would you pull it tight?

It could be bad bearings in the carrier

clymer manual. it tells you every thing you need to know about the 250r. and yes check the carrier bearings. jack the rear end up of the quad. by the swingarm. wiggle the axle back and forth and see if it moves. if it does. thats bad and could be the problem. just go an inch to an inch and a half of chain slack. thats about right for the 250r.

bearings are new, carrier is new, and axle is new.. i checked the bearings before i bought it.. i would have found it then, i haven't even had the thing a full week yet. that would happen for another 15 minutes...lol the quad was completely gone thu by last owner.. he got it together and sold it to me.

nothing is bent.

To properly adjust a chain, you want to create a straight line from the center of the countershaft, thru the swingarm pivot, and to the center of the rear axle, as if you are looking at it from the side. At this point, the chain will be at it's tightest point and this is where you should adjust the slack in the chain. You can use a tie down wrapped around the carrier and the sub frame to accomplish this. The problem with the 2-3 finger method is that with different shocks, linkages, and swingarm lengths, a rear end with a higher ride height will need more slack than one that sits lower. Hope this helps.

not sure but the pics u posted of quad the other day does look as if chain has lots of slack..it is not a real good angle but from what i see it looks like it needs tightened...

I adjust mine so theres about 3/4" play in the chain with myself sitting on it.
