View Full Version : Fandl's 2008 TRX450ER MX Build

Well to start it offf I recently purchased a 2008 Honda TRX 450ER off of ebay for pretty cheap. It had been stated that it only had 1 tank of gas through the bike and that it was in like new condition. After snagging it for so cheap I was pretty excited to get it home and tear it down to get it ready for the 2009 MX Season. Upon arrival is when I noticed the first sets of problems. But to make a long story short, the motor had been completeley disassembled aka the case halves split, and put back together with 1104 rubber gasket material which was found on the head gasket, between the case halves etc. After fighting with them for awhile, the situation is somewhat rectified.

But onto the build: The main goal of this build was to have a great handling machine, solid power, and great looks (corny I know). But another main goal was to keep costs down by using a lot of parts from my 2004 and re-servicing them, incluing all new powdercoat, bearings, seals etc. Then in turn the 2004 would use the 2008's stock parts to be put back together and sold.

Chassis: For the chassis I decided to leave the frame stock with no gusseting. The other components are take offs from my 2004 which are currently in the process of being powdercoated and having the bearings/seals replaced.
A-Arms: JB Racing LT +2 3/8" Candy Blue
Swingarm: JB Racing + 1 1/4" Candy Blue
Steering Stem: JB Racing +1 1/2" Chrome
Axle: Lonestar Axcalibur
Linkage: Quinn Motosports
Front Shocks: Axis Big Can Titanium Piggybacks Triple Adjust
Rear Shock: Single Rate Axis Big Can Single Adjust
Nerf Bars: Rath Monster Peg (To be Ordered)
Grab Bar: Rath
Bumper: AC Stadium

Tires/Wheels: I am going to run the Hipers that I had on my 2004 to help keep costs down, but will more than likely replace the rings.

Engine: The engine is going to be mostly left stock for reliability reasons.
Exhaust: Dasa Joe Byrd Style Exhaust (Ceramic Coated)
Cam: CRF 04 Dirtbike (mid range cam)
Headgasket: CRF 04 Dirtbike

Miscellaneous: I decided to try something a little different this time and add a Quad Tech Hump Seat cover (black/blue) and custom graphics from E-Sticky Graphics which are in the process of being made. I'll also be running Galfer stainless steel break lines.

This will be a work in progess. Many of the parts are already ordered and some like the Exhaust and Nerf bars are the last thing that I will need to buy.

Stay Tuned.

Yea they basically blatantly lied in the description of the vehicle. So either a crank or tranny was replaced, which worries me, but I'm tearing it apart next weekend completely and replacing all the gaskets with OEM factory ones and to assess what could be wrong, if anything.

I can tell you this I will NEVER buy a quad from Ebay again, plus I've been dealing with them about this since 2/10/2009 so yea, you could say I'm a little pissed at them.

In the end though, it's going to be a very nice machine.

To be honest you're right, you may get a better deal, but in the long run and in hindsight, I wish I would have spent a little more and bought one locally or even new.

There are a lot of things that were stated in the item description like "This quad is like new condition with only one tank of gas ran through it" yet the entire motor has been torn apart, the stem was bent, the motor mount bolts are stripped, crank case breather tube burnt through, etc.

By the way there name is ATV's and More, located in Salem, IL. I would strongly recommend against buying anything from them. It's been nothing but a struggle communication wise for them to try and make this right. They even had the audacity to tell me I was scamming them.

They have given some money back, not near enough to cover the labor cost, but they did provide a full set of gaskets. I really hope once we take it apart that the internals are okay, it seemed to idle without issue, but only true way to ensure it's going to be good for the season is to tear it down which is being done next weekend.

Thats an unfortunate ebay deal man... But atleast now youll have the peace of mind knowing everything is in perfect running condition.

That really sucks about the engine dude, your graphics look really sik though and i cant wait to see it as a finished product!!!! I know your getting jerked around from these guys but at least theyve given you something back, most people cant even get someone to call back when theyre getting screwed.

Thanks,

I live about 30 minutes from them. I haven't ever heard anyting bad from them but I also havent delt with them at all. Looks like the build is going to turn out great!

He's right. If you want to run that cam, you are going to need the cam tower from an earlier model. The 08 and 09's use an automatic decompression mechanism, which is totally different than the 04 CRF cam.

According to my mechanic. The 08 Dirtbike motors use this design, and not the 08 TRX motor's. The 04 CRF cam WILL work in the TRX motor however it will NOT work in the Dirtbike motor.

Especially since my Mechanic has already built 7, 08 motors this year that used this particular cam.

I'm not saying you're wrong but this is what I have been told.

Scro

I stand corrected. The reason I thought this was because a friend changed his tower to the older style, for the reason of having a manually adjusted decompression. I was thinking he had changed it just to use the cam.:o

I have heard that it was changed for the 2008, but after talking to my Mechanic, he assured me that he has built numerous 08's that are using this exact cam. But I appreciate the concern. You had me worried, I even called to confirm lol.

i thought R and ER cams were different? on sparks site they have ER only cams? i thought the difference was the decompressor but im not sure, if thats true idk about a crf cam working in a er. it prolly works but thats the only thing i can think of different, i know TRX's all use the same carrier year to year and cams interchange but i havent torn into a er yet

Decompression is automatic on the 08 Quad is all I got to say and the cam design is different.

The 08 kicker motor will except the 04-07 style cams, the ER will NOT except the later style cams.

The 08-09 ERs need there own style of cam due to the decompression.

Your mechanic is wrong. Feel free to check out cams suppliers websites for further info. (Web, HotCam)

Seat cover is done, waiting on things from PC, waiting on Axle from LSR, waiting on Stem from JB, waiting on New bushings for a-arms, waiting on Cam. Motor gets sent off this friday to get torn down.

So pretty much the only thing left to do is order my exhaust and my nerf bars. Now I just have to play the waiting game.

It is definatly a different cam for the 08 and up ER's! Your 04 crf cam will not work in that engine. Good luck with the rest of the build!!-JOEYD

The seat cover is done, I may be picking up an exhaust today, still waiting on parts to get back from Powdercoat.

Lonestar is rechroming the axle.

JB fixed my stem, and has it and my a-arm bushings on the way.

Still need to order nerfs and graphics.

I'll try to get a camera this week so I can get some pictures.

Oh and the motor is getting torn down this weekend to put the cam and new gaskets in.

Scro
04-09-2009, 07:18 AM
How much is LSR charging to rechrome the axle?

fandl450r
04-09-2009, 08:40 AM
According to LSR, they said $50.00 to straighten and rechrome it. It seems kind of low, but she assured me thats what the price was. No complaints there, I'll let you know how it turns out.

Sneak peak of the exhaust that's on its way:

Update: All parts are back from PC and getting ceramic coated. These pictures don't do the candy very much justice. Motor is back together. Just waiting on my axle and some bearings to be replaced.

As you can see the bike is to a bare frame. Also you can see the billet clamp for my Axis shock. Anyways here are the pics.

Update: So if you have read any of the beginning posts about the motor it was basically fubared from the get-go. It had 1104 rubberized gasket material throughout the motor which is a big no-no it was found anywhere from the case halves, to the head gasket, yes I said the head gasket.

Upon tearing it down, that material had actually SEALED the water jackets up so no radiator fluid could pass by the cylinder head due to it being globbed all over the head/cylinder. As it was torn down further and the cases were split, my mechanic noticed something immediately wasn't right. There was a small bolt and washer sitting at the bottom of the case along with a circlip. Turns out that a crank must have been replaced and whoever put it back together, hand tightened the bolts that hold the crank bearings in place. So the only thing hold one of the bearings in was a hand tigthened bolt. This basically shows a lack of technical expertise along with a lack of knowledge which genuinely worries me.

I am incredibly glad I decided to tear it down completely. There is no doubt in my mind if I would have rode it even a little bit, the motor would have grenaded.

DO NOT BUY FROM ATV'S AND MORE INC FROM SALEM, IL.

However the motor is back together and I should be picking it up this week and dropping it back in the frame. Updates will follow.

Got the Axle back from Lonestar and wow, it turned out brand new anddd they only charged me......$0.00, that's right, nothing. All I had to pay for is to get it shipped back which was 18. So they straightened it and re-chromed it for free.

I'm sending my head out this week, to get the cam put in as well as get it ported/polished.

I'll get some pictures today.

That I do! Well it just worked out that the new one happened to be black/blue to begin with, so I just decided to do the same kind of theme.

Yesterday I got the swingarm on, along with the bottom half of the motor in, my head should be here Wednesay, and really the only thing left to do is order my graphics which have kind of taken a back seat to everything else as far as priority was concerned. But should have a rolling chassis this weekend.

I know it's been awhile! No secret really, that's the same price they told me when I first called in. When I called to check on the status I asked her what the total was and when she said $18 I was a little confused.

She told me since I had turned in my warranty card they chromed/straightened it for free!

Head should be here today or tomorrow. I'm hoping it should be rolling by the weekend.

I like the build, but my favorite part is how you caught the engine half-assedness prior to it taking a dump on you.

Yea that's what I'm worried about. Hmm we will see.

If you do, I would definitely get a flat hood so you'll keep that clean look. I love the clean "factory" look.

The graphics companies need to build a program to allow folks to overlay the graphics...sure would help alot of folks out!

That would be a nice, but for now all we have is photoshop.

Again, sorry it's choppy, I did it in 2 minutes. I didn't apply any shadow or highlight either.

Very nice. I've been going crazy not being able to ride, so I'm glad it's finally ready to ride. Good thing the next four days are going to be 90+ degrees. :D

i didnt know e sticky would make fender overlays till after i had mine made.... wish i woulda went with the full fender sponsor overlays like your proof has in them...my fenders might look better after 4 nats..if u have any second thoughts about those graphics you shouldnt... i have roughly 30 hrs ride time on my bike and the graphics all look great except the small rear fender pieces below the seat where my boots rub... and that is normal... the tank graphics are holding up better on my tank than the nstyles from last year,, or the zing from 07.

and you can also get replacement individual pieces to boot!!

lookin' good!!! just not too much 'a' fan of big bumpers like that. but its youre quad, and so long's youre happy with it.

how much was all the powdercoating? THNX

Yea I'm a big fan of the old school looking bumpers, this bumper has been through hell and held up like a champ.

Ordered the graphics today, should be here maybe this week.

I paid 200 for all the powdercoating and ceramic coating, which isn't bad. He's done a lot of work for me in the past so I'm sure that seems pretty cheap.

wow! that IS cheap!! considering that its usually more when you buy it already powdercoated.

just another quick Q. how long does the anodizing last? a season? because PC'd is done after the first rock chip. the pressure washer only makes it worse after that.

Andonizing lasts a lot longer than PC, but is usually pretty expensive. In the MX world PC is the only way to go since it is so cheap to have redone and look like new. One trick is to use clear finger nail polish on chips to prevent it from peeling more. But good PC even when it chips should usually stay together.

This means a lot coming from your Mr. Morello :D (I love your KTM)

To be honest the amount I have in it is a little misleading since I had most of the parts stripped off my 04. But if we don't include the original costs I paid back in 2004. I have 4200 just in the quad, in about 2200 in parts/pc/motor. So under 6500 all said and done which isn't bad. But again things like the tire/wheels, shocks, a-arms, swingarm, stem, and some other miscellaneous pieces came off my 04, and were pced, and made new (bearings, seals).

I thought about getting some, and still may. I tried to keep the cost down on this machine.
