more power for the EX

Im new here to the site. i bought my 400ex new in 2002, but now im ready for more power. Ive never done any mods yet. Im thinking of a K&N, jet kit, and a Big gun full exhaust( Any others get more power?). Then i'm thinking of a 440 kit with 11:1 or 12.5:1. How much more power should i notice? Thanks

With the basic stuff you mentioned first you will definitly notice gains. I would add a sparks timing key in there. You could also go with a stage 1 hot cam. There are some free mods that help a bit on this site you could search for. Also get a 04-05 450R carb. Nice power gains have been reported and you can usually do this for less than $100. I would do that first and then upgrade the suspension. If you dont already you will soon notice the stock ex suspension is terrible. Then if you still feel you need it I would gradually bore it as needed or wanted. Go with 416-426-440. That way there if something does happen for some reason you have bore room and wont need to resleeve. Also if you bore if you go above 11:1 compression you will need to run race fuel or premium with an additive.

Where do u get the sparks timing key at and what does it do Advance the timing? If so how much?
