need help with a kawaski

I have a 96 kawaski 300 bayou 4x4 and it wont shift gears right. when you go thru gears and then need to down shift it will only down shift to 2nd gear but if you turn the reverse lever it will then down shift to 1st and neutral. thats the only way you can down shift. anybody know what could be causing this?

just a thought but have you looked into the idle speed versus the clutch adjustment? otherwise you may have a bent shift fork or two.
