i was reading owners manual on my 400 ex.in the back of the book it states what i allways suspected.it states the following."honda motor corp utilizes lean carb settings for emmissions".well my question is should i change my 148 main to a 150,move my needle clip down and go to a 42 ilde.i do not want to run my motor to lean bike is all stock except for a uni air filter.bike runs great now but to lean of a setting is unsafe.my plug is black around the rim ,i guess do to cold starts, and slightly light color at tip

all bikes and atv's come lean from factory "EPA", there not so lean they will damage motor though, you will notice a difference with a jetting change if you put on a aftermarket pipe you will really notice a difference

jetting is different from one area too the next, a 150 main should be ok without a pipe, 152 possibly i would leave the clip in stock position with the 150, move it up to second position from top with the 152, if your having trouble starting, go up next size on pilot, jetting is trial and error, but your on the right track

i agree with jerry. go to a 150, and change your pilot to a 40 or 42. you probly won't need to mess with the needle.

I switched to a 42 pilot and a 150 main, left the needle in the stock position, motor is stock with slight exhaust mod. The coldbloodedness is gone and the plug now has color.

thanks for the help.i am going to a 150 main, and a 40 idle circurt.this is slightly richer than the factory lean setting.i plan on leaveing it like that year round .i ride in temp range between 30'f and 80'f.sea level .maybe then i will get some color on my plug !.100% stock except for uni air filter.any snorkel mods??? its close to the motor so iam shure it draws in hot air.

i moved the needle up one position(clip down) to make it a little richer. now in the winter i have no sputtering problems at all when i start driving the bike. i do have a modded air box lid also. i have had good luck with a 152 in winter with the modded lid. in the summer i may use the 150. i will see what it runs better with. i am leaving the clip down one and a 42 pilot in for summer and winter.
