all 400ex have a tick to them especially if you have an aftermarket cam. If they are adjusted to spec then its probally just the normal tick.

stating the obvious, but make sure he is adjusting the valves properly, i.e., on compression stroke etc., if it still ticks, the rocker arms probably have play in them

replace the timing chain with a crf450 chain and put in a new tensioner. mine was ticking real bad until the tensioner finally gave out and the piston hit the valves
the stock chains stretch out

First check the timing chain by removing the chain tensioner and making sure its not broken, then, with the tensioner extended fully set it back in its hole and see where it bottoms out. if it bottoms really close to the case then you need a new chain. DID sells them for like 40 bucks.

Check the valve clearances. Twice if you have too. If they feel normal, take that top cover off and check the cam timing and check all of the rockerarms and tappet adjusters.

If you havent guessed so yet, then you have to remove the cylinder head and check to see if valves were hitting the engine, take the cylinder off and see if the piston is slapping or broken.
