I just picked up my first 250r yesterday its a 1986, and it seems to be running fine, sounds good, but when i get on it in first gear i can't really go too far until i have to shift to second, it starts to feel like its bogging, really soon.

At first i was pretty sure that it wasn't running right, but then i started to think maybe it just has a very short first gear. Does this sound normal?

What is the gearing on the quad set at right now? The gears are pretty short in first and seccond but it feels nothing like bogging just over reving the motor.

Yea, my dirtbike is a two stroke it feels a lot different, I can wind it out a lot longer, on this 250 if i don't shift right away then it kind just bogs.

are you familiar with carbs and setting them up? as mentioned you may have a jetting issue and may need to be addressed but prior to doing so you should varify that the float is set correctly as well.
