All the guys I ride with are on 450r's and yfz450's. Trails are not a problem, but I am working my quad as hard as I can to keep up with them, (its not the rider), especially at the sand dunes and more open trails.

I am in Utah and ride half the year in the desert and the other half in the mountains. The 400 out preforms the 450's in the mountains but they work me in the desert/sand.

I want to keep reliability and the low end torque the 400 is known for while being able to stay with them in the open, I dont need to beat them by any means.

Heres what I have so far:
Works Triple rates being re-valved
450 carb not installed yet
White brothers rev box
FMF slip on
K&N

Please let me know where to go from here.

Thanks so much in advance.

416 and a port and polish.

it will take a lot of work to keep up with them.

get a different exhaust, cam, piston (dont need to bore it out) and do all the free mods you can.

X2, get a stroker if you really want to hang.

The cheapest way? Get a used 450!

Mine hangs and sometimes pulls. I don't have any problems handling the 450s (when I'm riding my 400). Its a 426, mild intake porting, 11:1, 450 carb, whitebros full exhaust, wb cdi and cam. I posted some vids up a little while ago in some hill climbs against a couple 450s. I like riding it just as much as my 450.

Nice vids...who did your port work? DAB or Lyndsay for the bore?

Get a full exhaust, high compression like in the range of 11:1, port polish, loose the air box lid, maybe a cam and then mess with gearing and jetting and you should be good to go. My set up puts 37hp to the wheels, and a stock 450 puts 34.9hp to the wheels according to atvsport.com when they put there stock one on the dyno before their build. So some similar mods and you should have no prob hanging.

No, I did my own work except the cylinder bore. That was done by a machinist friend.

And its only a touch up on the intake side, nothing past the guides.

I have no motor work done. Just a slip on and K&N w/ lid still on. I can hang with my two buddies on there yfz's. The trails we ride are plenty open and they can barely keep up with me. Looong straight aways is where they can get you. Them bikes put out so much speed and power just giving it WOT in 2nd and 3rd its ridiculous. When we go to a hill climb spot they seem to have mor epower climbing but I have no problems climbing the same hills.

I'm gonna move on up to a 416 and some goodies, and maybe a port n polish.. hopefully that should help alot...

X3...stroker is the way to go if you "really" want to hang with the 450 quads. I'm talking about modded 450's too not stock ones that are in the 30+ HP range. I'd love to get my quad dyno'ed, but if I had to guess my motor combo has to be putting out just under 50 HP.
