View Full Version : What shocks

11-16-2001, 04:30 PM
I am looking to buy some new shocks pretty soon. I just bought houser a-arms for my 300ex but im not getting them till xmas. First off will my stock shocks be ok with the +2+1 a-arms, and should I stay away from bigger jumps while I have that setup or will it be fine. Will I need longer brake lines also? 2nd what are some good shocks that you guys reccommend. I am not looking to spend a fortune but I want to have good shocks. I dont want like "recreation" shocks you know. I want real race shocks but not looking to spend alot. I was looking at triple rates with rezzies on Shocconnection.com for 530$. Seems like an awesome deal to me but I dont know. Also I need shocks that will be long travel becuase of my a-arms.
Thanks Guys

yes..i'd recommend stayin away from bigger jumps with that set up ( stock shock's) and no you won't need long travel shocks unless you ordered long travel a-arms....but if you wanted decent susp you could get stock 400 ex ... or works aren't bad.. it is all in what you want to spend.... and what you use it for.. if it is an all out mx machin i'd say pep, tcs, elka' or works pro series.... but if it is a trail machine that you jump hard occasionally i'd say works steelers are pretty decent for the money....and remember when you order shocks to get them for +2a-arms..let me know if i can help any more

yes you will need longer brake lines. DONT get triple rates for a 300ex!!! the limited amount of travel and having 3 springs make them really soft! and i think WORKS SHOCKS discontinued there triple rate 300ex shocks because of this! So whats your price range? Im guessing around $550-$600? If so Id say get Front dual rates works shocks with rezzys (about $380)! And get a Works rear shock if you have enought $. I have front triple rates on my R and there SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO much better than stock! And i wouldn't jump AT ALL with stock shocks and +2 a-arms!!! My stock shocks and stock a-arms bottom easily on my 300ex!!! even when i get only like 4 feet of air they bottom (im only 125lbs), but not harshly, thats the only thing i like about stock 300 shocks! I guess i ride too hard. Do you have an axle yet? I have a +6 on mine, LUUUUUUVVVVV IT!!!!!!! and 18inch rear holeshot mx's (i like tamers better on the track, but i ride like 40% of the time on trails w/ my 300). what kind of ridin do you do?

11-16-2001, 09:06 PM
Yea I have a durablue eliminator axle, on +2. Should I make it wider. I mainly ride MX. About 90% of the time.

mine is at +6 and i fit through almost any trail, yea, make it around 50 inches wide if you can

I just dropped $1300.00 for the best shocks
works makes for the 300ex.And yes they discontinued the triple rates about 6 months ago.

And 1986trx250r where did you see works dual rates with rezzies for $380?????? They run $489
from Works themselves. I got the dual rates
with rezzies ($489) and the rear ultracross
with rebound and compression adjustment ($699)
I should have them in a couple of weeks.

I looked at the pep zps for $900 front and
$900 for the rear but decided to go with the works
instead.

Good Luck with whichever ones you choose

The cheapest aftermarket shocks your gonna get are the works shocks!!! The most expensive shocks to get are like the Axis!!! In the middle your gonna find TCS,and PEP. I'm probably missing one or two but those are pretty much the major ones. My theory is "you get what you pay for"!!!!! You have a tough decision ahead of you, good luck!!!

I only paid $440 for my triple rates w/ rezzys on my 250r! you got ripped off! the dual rates are normaly about 50-70 cheaper

Where did you find this mystical and mysterious +6 axle for a 250R ??? The biggest I can find is +4. Do you have a pic of your 250R ??? I would really like to see it.

i have a +2+2 axle on my R, and a +3+3 (i think) on my 300ex. The 300ex is an eliminator axle. Im kinda unsure what kind of axle is on my R. I'll have pics of my R in a week or so.

i think he means +3+3 overall +6....

Giz400ex

there's only +2 or +4!!!! I never heard of +3 or +6!!!

no, they make plus 6 axles,,, six inches wider overall, just because you guys dont see them in your dirtwheels doesnt mean they dont exist

Clay

Yes, +6 axles exist. One i can think of off the top of my head is a Durbablue for a Kawasaki Lakota. I know they exist.

I think a plus four 250r axle is plus six on a 400ex.

If I space mine (300ex) all the way out its +6 over stock! I have it at +4 1/2 or so now. The thing SOOOOO Stabil with the axle and 18inch holeshots! Im talking about HUGE powerslides. I do 360's on accident alot of times! Take a 50 degree turn in 4th gear wot! redrider, yes make it +4. I SERIOUSLY wouldnt jump ANYTHING with stock shocks and aftermarket a-arms! how much do you weight? You can put 250r shocks on if u want, i even have a pair for sale, 400ex shocks wont work cuz their too long!

Dave400ex

I think the 250r stock is 2 inches wider than the 400ex stock, so if you put a plus 4 250r axle on a 400ex it would be plus 6. I`m not totally sure on this though.

250r and 400ex axles aren't interchangeable.

Clay
11-17-2001, 07:16 PM
The axles are interchangeable. The hubs aren't. If you put a 250R axle in a 400EX, it will work as long as you use 250R hubs.

stocktires
11-17-2001, 07:21 PM
thats right cuz i was looking at x-33 Axles and there different (they include hubs). But the bolt paterns are the same so the teeth thing that the hubs go on must be diiferent, right?

Dave400ex
11-17-2001, 07:54 PM
I thought you could change them. They did in the one ATV Action on a 400ex and used 250r hubs.

stocktires
11-17-2001, 08:05 PM
I dunno, there is something about the hubs that dont match is all i know

Clay
11-17-2001, 08:20 PM
If they did that in atv action, they must have been using a 250R axle if they used 250R hubs. The splines dont match up on 250R and 400EX hubs. The axle will fit off a 250R on a 400, you just have to keep the 250R hubs.

does anyone know which axle/hub set-up is better?

Dave400ex
11-17-2001, 09:02 PM
They did have a 250r axle.

11-17-2001, 11:31 PM
So where did you get your triple rates with rezzies from for
$440??? And you said to put 250r shocks on a 300ex, but that
400ex shocks are too long for it? 250r shocks will fit on a 400ex
but they won't fit on a 300ex without a bracket kit.

stocktires

I got the shocks from a close friend. Im surprised no one has ever seen TR's w/ rezzys for around $450. But anyway 250r shocks are one inch shorter than 400ex shocks! You cant put 250r shocks on a 300ex without moding the top shock mount and u might you have to have 250r a-arms.

11-17-2001, 11:50 PM
The triple rates were around $450 last year but works raised
their prices this year. I can get them at cost but since our new
track isn't open yet we can't get a dealer number so I had to pay retail. I know the 250r shocks are shorter, but the way you worded it to him was that he could slap 250r shocks on his
300ex and be done with it. But to switch to 250r shocks you
have to have the bracket kit and you really need to switch the
a-arms as well.

Dave400ex

To make it really easy, just buy aftermarket shocks for the 300ex. Then you don`t need to worry about the bracket kit.

1986trx250r,

Where did you find Work's dual rate front shocks w/rezzes for the 300ex for $380?????? Anywere you go its about 450 and above. Just because they are dual rate doesn't necessarily meen that are over a hundred dollars cheeper. Give me the phone number to the place that sells Work's dual rate shocks w/rezzies for $380 because I'd like to see this place.

That was the old prices, before works bumped the price up. There is/ or was a $50-$60 difference in dual and tripel rates. I bought my triple rates from LRD (250r) for $450 when they had the cheaper prices.
