So my ex sounds like a sewing machine at idle.. valves need adjustment or what?

if it has not always sounded like this then i would say a valve adjustment is in your future. some aftermarket cams sounds like this from the beginning. also check your cam chain tensioner and cam chain for stretch

Well thing is I bought it used, rode it maybe a few times and never paid attn to it really.

Then I had some carb trouble and couldnt get it to run to well, got it running about 80% now (backfires a wee bit on a fast slowdown when I downshift a gear or so) and at idle is sounds exactly like a sewing machine. Kinda like a chattering/ticking noise I guess.

No idea if they were ever adjusted, no idea about any cam work done, etc.

sounds like your a little lean on the pilot jet, try going up one size.
as for the cam it might be worth taking the valve cover off to see whats in there. all cams call for slightly different clearances. plus that way you can also check the cam chain at the same time

I dunno tbh about the carb, it was fine afaik before i tinkered with it.

As for the cam, will have to see. when i get a chance. I need brakes, a new clutch cable and some other misc stuff.
