can engine cases be sand/bead blasted without disassemblying the motor?

Yes! Ive done it many times! Be careful around the seals! I used heavy duct tape in the seal areas. I use a cabinet style bead blaster. I blasted the hole motor including cyl. and head all at the same time. Then popped off the cylinder and made a plate outta aluminum and bolted it over the crank area with gasket included. Then I painted the lower end. Be sure to tape off all ares that you dont want sand getting into! Lots of duct tape!
