shifts backwards?

my friends bike was put together and shifted backwards. he brought it to me to fix it and i figured with all the bottom ends pretty much the same configuration. thought maybe someone else has done this and i want to know what happened and how to avoid it. thanks for anyone's response. i have taken it apart and am about to begin the re-assembly. i am assuming it has something to do with the shifting drum

lol. im not sure if this is possible. but who knows. if possible, the gear sets would have to be out of order and i think the rest of the tranny would also have to be.

check the stator ,its 1 turn too far !!
