e-mail print

TO: PRO-AM PRODUCTION NATIONAL CLASS COMPETITORS

FROM: ATVPG

DATE: March 18, 2009

SUBJECT: Sound Test Procedure for Pro-Am Production

Machines entered in the Pro-Am Production division shall have mufflers / silencers which do not exceed 99db(A) measured at half maximum rpm per MIC manual SAE J1287 test at 0.5 meters (20 inches).

A grace period will be allowed for all machines to come into compliance.

By amateur round 3 (Sunset Ridge - Walnut IL.) all machines must meet the sound expectations before they are allowed to compete. Below is the RPM range for the ATV's in this classification

* Can Am DS 450 - 2,950
* Honda TRX 450 - 3,750
* Kawasaki KFX 450R - 3,750
* Suzuki LTR 450 - 3,750
* Yamaha YFZ 450 - 3,750
* Polaris 450 MXR - 4,250
* KTM 450 SX - 4,625

Man whats with the noise factor here, I like LOUD!!!! Look at those RPM's, what does that mean everything but the Can-am is Loud! Japs! Look at KTM rev it up baby! Go figure! LMAO!

:eek2:

Japs?

Just giving the Jap's and Austrian's a hard time. Actually it appears as though the Canadian's have the louder quad since it gets tested at lower RPMs.

Interesting how there is no lead testing? :rolleyes:

Then none of those numbers are right, the YFZ revs to 10,000

Actually OutlawBill from sunny Southern California is correct! Right out of SAE J1213.

The rider shall run the engine with the gearbox in neutral at a speed equal to one-half of the rated engine speed.

Rated Engine Speed—The engine speed in revolutions per minute at which the engine delivers its maximum
Net Brake Power as defined in SAE J1349, as determined by the manufacturer.

See not all Cali's sit around on the beach all day and drink beer! :D

TNT... Outlaw Bill stated MAX RPM... what you posted is MAX Net Brake Power... there is the difference, most quads sign off about 7000 rpm in stock form but redline much higher.

I'm not trying to be nit picky, I just know the quads listed above have higher max rpm's than 2X the listed numbers above.
Yamaha YFZ450= 10,600 rpm
Honda TRX450R= 9850
and I believe the DS450 = 10,400 max rpm
9200 Max RPM on the KTM 450sx

Not sure of the others,

So I guess that make the AMA sound rules a bunch of B.S.

kfx450 is something like 10,500. give or take a few. i know its above 9.5 k though. and the peak power is at about 8k.

Guess we need to go do some digging in SAE J1349 to find out what "Net Brake Power" means, I will tomorrow too tired tonight. :tired:

Net brake power is the rpms found at peak hp at the brakes and these numbers are for stock machines, so a stock DS450 makes max hp at 5900 rpm then begins to sign off according to the manufacturer.

Makes sense to test at peak brake power. Flaw I see is modded engines with higher peak HP. Been pro's only all along now the pro-am class.

Whole things a joke anyway, it takes a lot of time to test and if they don't do it for everyone whats the point of having noise fluctuations during the race day. ATVPG tried this back in 06, stating that certain amatuer classes would be sound tested to 103db. If you had a loud pipe at tech you got to go. Well took forever to start the races, lines a mille long.

West Coast Choppers or performance cars show up with straight pipes and headers, like to see them tested and a riot start!....lol! Many city's have construction producing more sound. Late night 4th of July fireworks high in the air produce more sound DB's at further radial distances at a time when most city sound ordinaces are reduced 50% after 10PM then any quad race usually surrounded by trees during the day before 8PM. Go figure!

DS450RACER/DGS - Just curious do all racer go through the test to 94DB in the UK? How many at your nationals? We usually have around 800-1100 at our MX.

Yes all machines are tested during scrutineering (tech) - there could be up to 300 on a given race day.

To pass the test, for a 450, over here, your exhaust has to be 94dB or below while the engine is revved at 4500 rpm, measured at 500mm from the exhaust tip at an angle of 45 deg.

Noise is a big issue here and the test is due to change again next year - details here -new noise test (http://www.motocrossactionmag.com/ME2/dirmod.asp?sid=&nm=&type=news&mod=News&mid=9A02E3B96F2A415ABC72CB5F516B4C10&tier=3&nid=243F15A007AD4EEDA292C213A2D50649)

looks like you guys are heading this way too
