After every ride is a bit much.

On my CRF it's every 7 hours on the hour meter. (you got to remember they have two oil systems, motor/transmission and only hold about 700cc's in each one)

On my 440ex I do it about every 6-7 hours also but that is pure race practice time or race time. It also gets changed at the end on the race weekend reguardless of hours.

Recreational riding I would go about 12-15hrs on a hour meter.
On a stock honda maybe 12-20 hrs

Our bikes are very hard on the oil.

I changed mine about every 20 hours or so of ride time on the 400ex and my factory piston lasted me 4 years and I took it out and replaced with JE becuase I wanted to not because of need.

I have heard that on the 450r but guys that i used to race with changed the oil every 6 hours of ride time or so and they only changed the filter every other oil change. The 450's do take less oil also.

I too ran amsoil.

The MX bike motors that the 450s have only hold about a quart of oil and these are high reving high performance motors so yeah it needs replaced every ride.

got my 450r last year some time. didnt change the oil filter until a few weeks back. wasent any metal in it and was low on $ so i didnt get a new one. i change the oil about every 15 hours.

I change mine when it gets dirty. Dont have an hour that I set to do it. Same with valves when I hear it and feel it they get done. I ride on average maybe 5 hours a time. Last weekend I was out riding for 7 hours, now that was a wiked sunburn/farmers tan. My arms in just 1 section between rolled up jersey and gloves were lobster red it was funny. Back on topic the filter gets changed every other oil change and the oil like I said is just when I see it dirty. I would say every 4 rides? Synthetic oil doesnt break down easy and for on road vehicles they can go 15,000 miles without a oil change. But this being off road and the motor really pushed it gets dirty faster. No need to change it if it isnt broken down just when it starts to get black.

not sure on the ther 450s but dry as possible(replacing filter and drained oil) it only takes about a quart and 3/8.

and i change mine every 2-3 track rides. this year im changing it every 2 because ive gotten alot faster and im revving it alot more. it really depends. but i change it around every 10 hours.

another good way to tell when you need an oil change is if it is hard to shift. or if its hard(er) to find neutral.

Every 3-4 rides or about 20 or so hours. I only ride trails so no insane revving and stuff and I use mobil 1 which will last for a LONG time.

if you are doing hardcore racing. i would change it after every ride yes. but for the average joe...every 15-20 hours of riding is the best. for me that equates to about once a month.

Is that true about being harder to shift or find neutral?

I was paying that, since I was buying honda oil from the dealer. I now get mobil 1 synthetic. Walmart has it for 6 bucks a quart.

The 450R's don't carry as much oil as our 400EX's and are a much higher performance motor, so changing the oil on them is more critical.

"You'll never damage the engine by changing the oil too often." Clean oil is a happy engine.

Which 450?

I change oil in my 400ex every 20 hours. I installed an hour meter on it. Sucks though I left it on for a day last week.

I will do one national GNCC and maybe a practice ride but that's about it. Then it's time to change it! I run Rotella so it's cheap and it's cheap insurance! Your never gonna hurt your motor by giving it clean oil!!!!!

cleaning air filter, changing oils/filter is the best preventive maintenance you can do. I have a crf450 and clean filter after every ride, change trans and motor oil every other ride. And change oil filter every second oil change.

If you guys are paying 25-30 dollars for an oil change you seriously need to research alternate oil. As long as the oil is not energy saving it should be good to run. I ready many many articles over at TT, and by far the best oil to run was Rotella T dino. You can pick it up at Wal-Mart for ten dollars a gallon. It is safe to run in both sides of my crf (trans and motor).

i'm with flewbyu, if it's dirty then i change it. i don't have an hour meter. starts getting dark then it gets new. i have replaced my filter everytime in the past but now i think i'll consider every other time. then again they're only about 2 bucks.

Buy a stainless steel filter for 20 bucks they're reuseable. That saves on the cost.

Really? I cracked a case and the main culprit was oil? If oil is something to relax about why would most B class and up riders change it inbetween every moto?
