is there any difference between an 06 piston and a 04 piston

Yes completely different. Not interchangeable in the slightest.

04 pistons are 94mm and the 06+ are 96mm.

in addition to what d3trix said. they also have different sized wrist pins, so if you had a different sized cylinder, it still woulnt work cause the wrist pin sizes.
