Just got my brother in law's 440 running and when we started it up it did not take long for the header pipes to be GLOWING red what might be causing it? Tried to do a search but 440 is to short because I remember seeing something about this but can not remember what it was. Think it might be running a little on the lean side so what size jets are you that have the 440's running?

thanks,

Sounds good, he has the dyno jet kit in his and I told him to go to the largest jet he has (170) turn out the air fuel screw an additional 3/4 of a turn and move the needle clip down one more notch to see if that helps. Because if that jet is not big enough he will either need to call dyno jet and see if they have larger jets or go back to original jets and go larger.

TRX400EX, 400FW, 450S and 450ES customers. If you notice, or express concern that the header pipe (where it exits the cylinder head) on your unit has a reddish glow during idling or riding, don't be alarmed. The header pipes on these units are made of a steel alloy for durability, and are a single wall design (no inner pipe) for light weight. The reddish glow is normal according to American Honda.

Yeah, since I went with a 10.8 to 1 compression, I noticed my header glows red fairly quick... I now use a mix of race gas that has lead in it to help cool it down. No problems with the 416 except a lot of crashes since!

Good luck guys!:)

if you guys want to know of ways to keep it cool you can go with larger oil tanks, air scoops and if you go to fourstroketech.com they make another oil cooler kit you can install to help keep it cool and if I remember right its pretty cheap. Also i've heard of people wrapping the header in some heat wrap stuff to keep the heat away from the motor and oil cooler and also adding air scoops might help.
