I have a 2001 400Ex that I just installed a Dynojet kit on. I have a K&N filter with no airbox cover, E-Series slip on and a rev kit. The kit says to install the new needle with the clip on the 3rd slot and place the washer ontop of the needle. Then it says to install a 170 jet but I called Dynojet and they told me to put in a 165 instead. Well the problem is it will hardly run and seems like it is flooding out and running really rich. What could be the problem? I am doing exactly what they say and having no luck, or do they have their heads up there ***? What do you guys think i should do?

Check and make sure the choke is off. Have you checked the spark plug? Double check the main jet to see if it's tight. Look down the throat of the carb. to see if the needle is stuck/sliding up and down properly. There might be debris on the needle valve/seat causing fuel to flow unmetered into the engine.

Just a few suggestions to get you started.......hope this helps.

Good Luck!

Although I don't think the jet is the problem, it is still probably a little rich. Try a 158-160. Clean the carb really good and make sure nothing is sticking. Hope this helps.

the quad has basically no hours on it! not a bit of dirt. I took the carb apart again and found no problems. Most people on other threads talk about 155-158 jets. I just cant figure out why Dyno-jet is telling me 165. I'm getting blueish color smoke that literally burns my eyes and as I roll on the throttle it smokes more and sounds as if it is drowning.

Hmmmm.... Sounds like bad gas to me. Try and put the needle clip one the first notch (leanest setting) and go from there, If that doesnt work try and lean your mains out.

roc....run the needle in the stock position...and throw a 155 jet in it. run it and pull the plug for a check on its color.

Pappy, stock posistion is 3rd slot, but i am using there kit needle which is also 3rd slot just a smaller diameter. So should I just drop the jet size?

yes....drop it down. i had the same problems you described. i couldnt run anything over a 155. the pipe folks tend to want you rich for safety i believe.

The kit tells you to run way rich. Like it said to put in a 170 but when I was done I ended up putting in a 155 with the needle on the 2 clip from the top.

Pappy, just changed to 155 and it started easier, but still bogs out as i increase throttle. how many turns out should I have the mixture screw. Dynojet told me 3.5 but that seems excessive. Also should I still leave the clip in position 3?

start at 2 1/2 turns out......if that helps then possibly lean it a bit more by needle position. keep an eye on the plug....u wont get good color until its warm and a full throtle run has been done.

Dont mean to sound ignorant, but what color should I look for? Also gojk, how many turns out is your mix screw?

I adjusted the mix screw to 2.5 and it still cuts out although it will allow me to give it full throttle with the choke full on, but it does pop(backfire).

its sounds still too rich to me....due to having to use the choke. throw a 148 in it....and see if it will idle better. dont hammer it tho. a 152 would be better if you have it. if it does run better after the lower jet.....it would seem to me that yer heading in the right direction.

as far as the color of the plug.... try for a lil lighter then a paper bag brown.....light tan

Pappy, so at this point I should remain on slot 3 and still continue to downsize the jet?

Pappy

i would. we tried a larger jet in mine because i could get the color i wanted. it did the exact same thing as you are describing. i kept working down jets until i was right back at a 155...2 1/2 turns out on teh air screw and the needle in the stock position.

change the plug also...if it was that rich its possible its about done

also....you said the washer on top of the needle? my needle goes thru the washer. i wonder if this is wrong and its not lifting the needle? hard to say without seeing it
(nevermind the washer thing..i forgot about the jet adapter)

I have tried just about everything!!! Think my only choice at this point is to take it into the shop!

no luck with the new plug?

If you have too use the choke in order to get full throttle, the quad is not getting enough fuel. The hesitation you're experiencing is caused by a lean running condition, not a rich running condition.

Sounds like the carb needs to be thoroughly cleaned. You probably have a plug jet/fuel orifice somewhere.

BTW---Before checking throttle response, make sure the quad is warm, I.E. run for atleast 5-10 minutes.

Also if you have run the quad for any length of time with the choke on, it would be a good idea to change the spark plug as well.

Another note.....install a #40 pilot, this will help with the initial throttle response.

Good Luck!

Well I screwed with this thind for 2 weeks trying to get it dialed in and had no luck! So I took it to the Local Honda dealer and found the problem all along was the guy I bought my WB E-Series pipe from had installed the baffles backwords and it was getting way to much back pressure. Who'd of thought? Anyway its fixed and it FLYS!!!

Thanks Roc
