How do they perform? Does anyone recommend one? If so what mods did you do, and the performance.

I stated this in an erlier thread, but it is woth repeating:

I would use the '04-'05 450R carb instead. Her are my reasons:

1) Price. $170 for a NEW, geunine HONDA 450R carb
2) Sucess. There are hundreds (really!) of others on this board that have used the 450R carb successfully.
3) Help. See above, but ask a question, read the stickys, there is ALOT of help for the 450R carb on the 400EX
4) EASE. IT is an easier carb to work with, IMO.

Here is a link to my 450R carb installation that shows you how, with some pictures!!!!

Yup. The 05' carb. I had it on in 1 hr. I cut the inlet boot at an angle to get the thing to fit over the whole carb. It was easy and WOW! a GREAT improvement. I did change my pilot screw though. Also the "choke" is not easy to use. I only want it in the freezing cold to start it the first time though. I can get to it with the seat off. I love this mod. Zrpilot's pics helped out alot. If I had to rate this mod, I would do this as #2 after putting on a aftermarket pipe.

Are you talking about the filter side or the intake manifold. You should be very careful with the manifold, you don't want a leak there.

I still think the '04-'05 450R carb is the better choice

My choice is the 04-05 450r carb. the 06-07 450r carb is a FCR carb. to much of a pain in the *** to make fit(too tall)..i have had strokers with both style carbs and i also have a edelbrock carb on a 416. all are good carbs but when it comes to ease of instillation you cant beat the 04-05 carb. your bike will run better with the FCR off 06-07, but not easy at all to make it fit. i had a 465 kit from duncan and i ran the FCR. that bike hauled. but i have a 04-05 on my new 500ex because you can pour more fuel with this carb.

these are just some things that i have found out while building these drag racing quads. i hope it helps
