I just installed a pure polaris exhaust and I'm making my own air filter/ intake. I went to start the quad up with the stock air filter/ air box and just the slip-on and it would only run with the choke on. I would hit the throttle and it would die. I thought I jetted it wrong (172.5 main) so I was worried. I pulled the gas cap off to make sure I had gas and you could hear it sucking in air. Without the gas cap on it ran like a champ (sigh of relief). I bought the quad used and I'm really feeling like the gas cap on it isn't the right one. It has no vent or hose on the top. It's just a solid gas cap. Does this sound right for the gas cap on an 05 predator?

Not sure what they had for a cap, but the problem looks like you already solved it. might be a vent tube coming from tank, as found on most polaris, could be pluged or colapsed. I made a vented cap from a 2000 scrambler I had. just see if you can get a vented one for it.

Yep has the right cap. Vent tube is pinched probably between the tank and frame.

Well I stand corrected after looking at this assuming yours is a '05 Pred 500..

Well I still think my cap is wrong. Every oem parts diagram shows a vent tube and smaller gas cap than is currently on my quad. Also there is a hole below the indicator lights which seems to be where the vent tube would go. I've attached a pic of an 05 predator with a vented gas cap and a pic of my gas cap. I've never seen one with a cap like mine.

I believe you are correct from looking at parts diagrams. Good opportunity to put an anodized aluminum vented cap on for a nice look.
After looking at your pic it looks like the OEM Outlaw gas cap which is NOT vented.
