That tapping sound can also sometimes be the chain slapping on the guide plate. It may also be something loose ,hope you have fun on that thing.

If you're looking to go faster anyways, it might not be a bad idea to remove the head and check over the valve train components along with the timing chain. Always better to check out those little noises before they become big noises with big $$$. Good luck.

These "lil motors" aren't so bad. Definitly get yourself a service manual. Either from a dealer or plenty of places online. I'm just about to tear into my motor, bought a "Clymer" manual on ebay for about $25. If you've got basic mechanical knowledge from wrenching on cars, you should be able to tackle a top end rebuild with the manual no problem.

i would read up on some of the many things you could do then go from there there very basic motors and if u want a big jump in power and feeling i would go for the big bore its a great start on bulding your motor and is quite relieable

From what I've ridden, I think the 400's actually have a better feel and balance to them.
Funny how your GA accent comes out even while writing, if I wanted to say "we all", would you say "wall'?

lol, just kidding. Seriously, maybe you can find a friend who has a 700 then ride them both. Maybe you'll like the 700 better, it'll probably cost more to build, but you've already got the 400 which can be hopped up pretty easily. Everyone has thier own preference though, I wouldn't spend the time and effort building up the 400 if you're just going to switch to a 700.
