gotta 05 trx450r. it has a 185main, 52pilot, full curtis sparks exhaust, curtis sparks foam filter, no air box lid. the problem is when its idling and i stab the throttle it hesitates and bogs before reving. also when riding and i let off the throttle it backfires/pops. i've taken the carb apart and cleaned it. i've adjusted the mixture screw 1/4 turns at a time in and out. still does the same thing. i've replaced the plug. i also replaced the plug boot due to some corrosion i found inside where it screws to the wire. the wire also had some corrosion but i just cut it back a little and reused. other than the hesitation and popping coming off the throttle the motor runs strong. any help is appritiated, thanx. Richard

go up one on the pilot, and move the needle clip down one if you have a ncvq needle or you could even try to shim the stock one up if you want

Suggestion is exactly right. From your symptoms, you are running lean, particularly on the bottom end. Go one step fatter (higher number) on the pilot, which should be a 45. Try the mixture screw about 2- 2.5 turns out.

He's already running a 52 pilot.
48 is a stock for 05 carbs.
42 is stock for 06+ carbs.

rdj450 is the bike shooting flames on decel or just popping?
If it's shooting flames the pilot might be too rich. Any black smoke when you snap the gas off idle?

I find it hard to believe that a 52 isn't large enough for your setup.
Check and make sure your header bolts are tight also.
Copper crush washer in the head?

not shooting flames, just popping and no black smoke when i stab the gas at idle. it had 190main and 48pilot so i dropped the main down to a 185 and the pilot up to the 52 and there were no noticable changes. i did go down one notch on needle and it seems to have made some difference but did not cure the symptoms. i'll check the header mounts tonight (if i get home in time).

im not a jetting expert but my 04 450r has more mods than yours and bfore i tore it down i had dasa exhaust, filter, hotcams stage 2,and a 12:5:1 cp piston and my pilot was a 50 i think and then a 185 main i believe and it seemed to run pretty good
