Hey folks, I just wanted to share a positive experience with my 450ER, since we all read so much negative about them daily, I would love to hear your positives as well.

I just spec`d my Valves for the first time on my 07 ER, it has 30 hours on it.

There was NO adjustment needed! They were all in spec, almost EXACTLY.

I change my oil after each day of riding, so each oil change gets maybe 3 - 6 hours.
I have ran rotellaT 15W40 dino oil
Honda GN4 10W40
Honda HPS synthetic 10W30
Maxima Premium 20W50 in the extreme summer rides.

I also clean my air filter after EVERY ride.

I will open it up to hear some more good reviews for a change, I know they are out there!

I too have the 07 ER. I LOVE IT!!!!

I change my oil about every 3 rides or so. and clean my air filter after every other ride.

I have never had any problem starting mine, I have no complaints.

I've had a similar experience. Changed oil/filter/air filter after every ride. Just replaced intake valves after over a year of hard riding and racing...pretty good in my book.

I bought my 05 R in 2007 fresh out of the crate I only use ams oil in it. At first I was scared of it because the bike I had before my R was a 1999 300ex and it was nothing compared to the R. I will stay with Honda because of the reliability they have never left me on the trail. Now I can throw my R around like nothing and theres nothing like hill climbing with it.

I can't wait for Handa to put EFI in the Rs!

Also have a 2007 450er, bought it brand new in 2006 and raced it two year on stock motor from C class to A class and didnt have to do anything with it till this year. Changed oil after every ride and air filter also.

i dont have a 450r, but a testament to honda. when i was a stupid 12 year old kid my dad bought an XL250 enduro for me, i rode it through 3 rear tires and 1 front tire in the 5 years i had it, and i never did anything but put gas in it, literally no oil change, no spark plug, no air filter, and it never quit. i didnt know any bettter.

Sounds like a lot of the 400EXs I see on the trails here.

I've had mine since march of 04, I dont race but I do ride hard, im on the limiter alot. I have hundreds of hours on my stock piston still. I have been collecting parts to tear into it this winter though. I change my oil at around 8 hours or so everytime religiously.

I too was a young and dumb once I had my first 200x wheeler and ran 3 + years or so on no oil changes and through a rod. I then learned to change the oil alot and pay attention to your oil filter look for added metal, if seen dont ride it anymore. :)

Bought my 2006 in January 2006 and just checked the valves again 2 weeks ago...so far, I never had to adjust the valves. I've had a brand new set of shims for 3 years and never used one of them yet.

So far, it it has never quit on me...knock on wood.

I love my 450r....as a testament to the reliability of a honda....My dad bought a brand new 250X in 1992...never touched the motor other than to change oil. It was ridden regularly since purchase until about 4 years ago when I go on it and started racing. It is still on stock piston and rings from 92 and still runs strong. 17 years of riding and its still going strong. I hope my 04 R will hold up like that

See the trend here, 450R's (and most bikes) live and die with oil changes and using quality oil. I have an 04 that I've had no problems with, just change to oil after most rides, 8-10 hours.

have an 05 i bought in october 06, change the oil every 4-5 hours, clean air filter every ride and adjust valves every other oil change. Have over 100 hours on mine, fully stock motor still, knock on wood.

I"ve had mine since march of 04, I've had it checked a few times, this year was the first time I had to reshim the valves. I am anal about changing my oil though, i've missed a few rides cause I didnt change my oil and I just wont ride it if its at 10 hours or close to it.

Mine has had the HRC cam since new, I put the sparks pipe on after first oil change, since they I ride it hard, im on the limiter alot so thats why im so anal about oil changes.

My ex had a Hotcam old stage2 that I could lug a bit more so I wasn't on the limiter with that so I let it go 20 or so hours on an oil change and thats still on the first 416 ross piston I got from c&d racing back in 2003, still on the same rings runing strong.

So again Maintinence is the key to keep these off road machines running longer. The lazier we are as the owners the shorter the machines life will be.

I have owned m '04 450R since March of '04, it has been riden very hard. I have been racing since i have owned it as well. The valves have been adjusted a couple of times when motor was stock, now i have a HRC cam, Head work, new valves, 13:1 piston, and FCR Carb, plus higher rev limiter that it sees regularly racing and all of this is still on Factory Bottom end> Never have had any issues with the crank. I change the oil regularly and filter. Also trans fluid as well getts regularly changed. I used Honda Factory oil in it until i did the motor work. Now i use Castrol Synthetic and still use the Honda Brand Factory Trans Oil. Since i have owned it, this winter was the first time it has been completely torn down and gone through. Everything checked out good. Honda is most definitely the definition of reliable. As far as i am concerned. Hell, if anyone is going to be at Ballance this year for the AMA Nationals i'll be there on it.
