View Full Version : 400ex valve adjustment

hey i just bought a 02 400ex and it needs the valves adjusted, what all do i have to remove to get to them, i've been looking and have seen like the gas tank needs removed what else would need to get to the head thanks

I just did mine yesterday and it was pretty easy, I had a special tool I bought from a motorcycle shop that had the .04 on one end and 0.5 on the other and it was pre bent so I didnt have to bend my own and it made it sooooo easy

Its called a " tappet feeler gauge " and it saved me ALOT of frustration and time.

Here is a pic of what it looks like, this is just one like it, mine was .04 and .05

well i adjusted my valves today but it still has a little bit of a tick, ive heard that 400s just have a tick to them, jw is this is true

yeah they all have a tick to them it seems, if you have your valves in spec, plenty of oil, and running super unleaded or premium gas then you should be ok.

Could be your cam chain making noise too?
