all honda's are cold blooded, using the choke causes this, try getting a 40pilot and not using the choke, pump the gas about 4 times, and it will fire right up, battery may be dead as well

no way you go to belleville honda!

i live 10min out of belleville, wow

with your mods, a 42 (your needle choice) 155 (give or take) soundsd about right, i am guessing on most of this, as i have not jetted a 400 comming up on a year, as mine got stolen

I would say with your mods a 158 would be a little better. and a 40 or 42 PJ. which ever you prefer. a 40 is the way I went.

im a good guesser, for never working on a 400 in over a year almost, lmao, for my 440, i had a 45 pilot, and it was still gay to start, but o well, its some rednecks problem

hey boys we have one more illinois rider here. i am from the little town of staunton if you ever heard of that. it is about an hour from belleville. i hope that 40 pilot jet works for you. i have a 42 in and it did not help hardly at all. i have to pump the throttle a few times to get it started. i also need the choke on full or it will not even try to start. my battery is good and i have a new dpr8z plug in. as a matter of fact, moving the clip down one position made more of a difference than the 42 pilot jet did. i have no clue why. after i moved that clip down i have no sputtering problems when it is cold.

we ride at coulterville and flatriver to, sucks its cold though, wont be goin for a while, and my R is broke anyway, cracked my frame 7 times, but anyway, come march or so, IM or PM me or post somewhere and let me know where you all are going, perferably flatriver, i just like going fast in sand, and they have a few nice jumps there, just gotta look... :)

I've had the same problem with my 400 EX and found that there's nothing like a good hot battery and clean spark plug for starting.

Like someone said above, check the simple things and break it down. I was once out of gas and thought it was more. Check your spark plug wire and make sure its snug against your plug.

Oh, and if you need to change your plug, it can be a pain in the a** to get at. Mine requires an 18mm spark plug socket. I had to grind my brand new Craftsman socket's diameter down just to spin that plug lose!

Thanks for posting, not surprising others have had the same problem.

i use the stock spark plug socket to get mine out. I will post if my 40 pilot jet helps to fix the problem.

Thanks for all the help

it seemed to help it start better. I will have to do some longterm testing.

Thanks for all the help.

My wifes (used to be mine) 400ex is a real pain in the butt to start and it seems to be getting worse, I have the dnyo jet 165 main and the 40 pilot in it and it will foul the plug without even thinking about it and it does not matter how old the plug is, last one had only one ride on it. I tell you this is getting frustrating, guess I will have to buy stock in NGK.
I was wondering does the cdi box have a seperate circuit in them for start up and run? And if so maybe they are not getting a hot enough spark for start up? Just a thought but does anybody now if this is possible.
