I have a transmission that blew second gear, but before it blew it created so much heat that it turned the mainshaft, 5th gear and the 3rd & 4th combination gear blue. I'm not familiar with steel properties so I am wondering if once a gear has been blued is it junk? I was told by a local machine shop that if the gears are case hardened and they wont be able to release any carbon, therefore not becoming soft or brittle? I'm just looking for a second opinion, any help is appreciated. Thanks

the issue is how hot did they get? you will never know. if the molecular structure of the gears was changed they can be retreated with heating and cooling procedures. i would suggest getting hi-strength gears and replacing them all while you have it apart.

no man dont even chance it. your gonna have fun pulling it down again and replacing them. if you have anything bigger than a 300 i would get stronger counter shaft gears.
