Ok, I have done a search on this, But I am still twisted.
I have a short rod 86 motor,
Just bought a cylinder and piston, But when I received it.
It is a 88 cylinder and piston,
I know that the wrist pin sits about 5mm higher on the 88 piston.
What is the easiest way to make the 88 piston work on the 86 short rod..???????
Need some advice

i could be mistaken but i dont think its possible to put your 88 piston on your 86 crank, check skirt clearance to counterweight. an 86 top end works on a later bottom end with a baseplate spacer but not the other way around. even if the piston does clear the crank you would have to mill that 5mm off the top of the cylinder to get your piston to zero at the deck, i dont know if anyones done that but it sounds insane. it would probably cut all the way to open water jacket. looks to me like you need a later crank.

or i guess a 86 piston would be alot cheaper than a late crank.

dont know what i was thinking.

some one tell me if im wrong... but i think that the 87-89 pistons work on the 86, the 86 skirt is longer so it wouldnt work on the 87-89. and if you have the 86"long rod" you need a spacer plate to lift the "87-89" cyl's up to it doesnt slap or hit the head.
the 86 is the long rod years and the 87- 89 are the long rod.

FALSE INFORMATION ABOVE!!!

you CAN run a 86 rod and 88 cylinder, you need to run the 86 piston. but dont bore over 68.00 on that 88 cylinder

Ok Thanks,
So, If I buy a 86 piston and use the 88 cylinder everything will be fine?????

yep. as long as the rod/pistons match up, the cylinder all have the same general port layout. just a few minor tweaks.

Why would you not bore past 68mm on a 88 jug. That is the whole idea of using the 86 piston on the long rods. The 87-up piston is only made to 080 over. You should be able to push it all the way to 69.5 before a resleeve, provided you are using an 86 style piston
