What does the preload on the shocks do? Like if i make it longer by turning the adkustment looser does that make it softer or stiffer or what. if i make it longer will that give it more travel for jumps.

If you loosen teh pre-load rings, it makes the suspension softer. You cant get more travel by adjusting it, just how stiff you want it until it bottoms.

so what would give me the best suport for jumpin the loose or the tighter setting. what i mean is with which setting will it bottom out easier

If you bottom out over the jumps now, tighten the preload rings. That will make it so it is stiffer. Tighten= stiff
