View Full Version : Ok, another 400ex vs. Z400 thread...

Ive got a friend that I ride with all the time that has a Z400. The problem is all I here about is how the Z is far superior to the EX.... Gets old after a while. Well after I piped and cammed mine we raced, he had pipe and jets and cams. I beat him from a dig and packed the tires through 3rd. Well he still talks smack saying that he didnt get a good launch. Blah, blah blah, well we've had plenty of oppertunitys to race but either he blocks me on the trail or just doesnt want to....
As it sits right now he has a stock bore Z (I think) 12.2-1 comp, jets, Yoshi pipe, FCR carb, and cams I think. My mods are 416 JE piston, 12.1 comp, Stg 2 Hot Cam, jetted stock carb (450r carb soon) K&N no lid, Yoshi pipe, head-pipe mod, stock gearing.
I want to know what more I can do to completly obliterate this Z, I may be able too right now but I dont know. Any help, tips, or ect will be greatly appriciated. Thanks!

Port and polish would help along with that 450 carb. But if you want to stomp him so bad he cant open his mouth ever again, you could stroke it, but that can get pricy.

OMG!! It's the "I didn't get a good launch" excuse :rolleyes: If he truly did not get a good launch he would have immediately wanted a rematch to vindicate himself. I know I would. With the mods you have you may be dead even in a race. The Z400 is a little faster than a 400EX stock. He has nearly the same mods as you do so he is probably still a little faster than you. Since you went into the engine you should have a real header on there and not a stock one you ground the welds on. Also send the head out for a good port/polish job, and install the 450 carb. Then you should be able to beat him no problem.

I actually thought about the +4 stroker crank but I cant remember who sells them now. 450r carb should be in this week so that should help a little. And I know I need a port and polish job might do that if I find the stroker kit.

Mine was dead even with my buddys... His was stock though.

hot rods makes a nice one for 300 but i think this is a gimic but they say it only fits their piston but i thought a piston was a piston so idk

Well the one I found a while back said the piston skirt had to be machined to clear the crank?!? Maybe thats why Hot Rods want to use there piston.

i know i have said this before, but call four stroke tech. they are the best with 4 strokes.

If you guys are racing a short distance the cheapest thing you could do would be to drop a tooth on the front sproket.

My brother in law has a z. His is pretty much stock while I have the 440 big bore kit on my ex. Dragging, my fourwheeler could eat his, however his has a higher top speed. But, a lot of it is how you ride.

Well with my 13t on I couldnt keep the front end down, I could lay over the handle bars and it would still come up through 4th.:D
Im going to check with my friends at the local Honda shop and see what they can do performance wise for under a grand.

that 450 carb and a good port job will unleash the beast. i dont know what all the fuss is, i got basicaly a stock 400ex just small stuff and a crappy dg pipe that is more like a oe replacement than a performance pipe, and my friend has an 04 z400 and has a big gun pipe and a k&n lid and filter, and big gun rev box and i almost always beat him, i cant take him in a long drag but in a short strip, i win, in twisty woods i win, and up the face of test hill at silver lake i beat him. (170ft sand dune i believe) its a long steep hill and i pulled harder in every gear than him. what makes the z so much more superior? the only thing i can see is hes got about 75lbs on me, plus the z is a little heavier. i know better shocks and a faster reving power plant. bla bla bla. ride honda!!!

Got the 450R carb on and running saturday evening. Im still running way lean with a 170 main. Im going to Honda tommarow to see if they have any jets in stock. Even with it too lean its a beast I deffinatly recommend doing the swap.
