best thing to do would be get some older issues of Motorcross action or dirtrider and read the reviews of the bikes and find one with characteristics you like. I think you should consider a KTM250exc engine it would one of a kind and would totally rip. KTM knows 2-strokes

They do put out more power than a stock to stock trx engine.

but the problem is they dont have a counter balancer.
all quad motors have them.
they will vibrate the crap out of you.

i just thought itwould be cool to use a yfz chassis and throw a yz250 in it...

as noted above lack of a counter balancer is the killer. if you were to do it though, I would look for a wide ratio motor such as a WR250 or KTM 250xc-w or exc. The motors make longer power than MX spec motors, dont have have such a hard "hit" and wide gear ratios if this were to be a trail quad.

I'd say a 92-01 CR250 engine is the best. Real powerhouses. Service Honda figured out how to mount them in 400EX frames in a way that cancelled out most of the vibration.

Not sure of exact #'s but more power and less weight than any stock 450F. Honda guys seem to like 95-96 the best.

That was the 86-91 style with the power valves removed. Not sure what they had inside, but there were custom block of plates where the power valve stuff was.

The Rotax 257GSi that came in ATK 260LQ bikes was supposed to be a real runner, and it's counter balanced, too!

You'll just have to put the chain on the other side.

It also worked in Evinrude's outboards, and they're even cleaner than equivalent four strokes.

There were actually a couple of quads; the Rebel/Star 250 you see in the links, and the Phillips/Rotax Superquad that was sold here and there abroad.

I don't know what, if anything, is different between the engines used in the quads and those used in the ATK bikes
