View Full Version : Dont buy Dell!!

I know this has nothing to do with ATVs in any way, but it is something i would like to share with my fellow riders.

Dont buy a Dell Computer!!!

Reason being. I just recently purchased a new desktop from them. Which took me 5 weeks to get the computer after i placed the order, because we all know it takes them probably 15 minutes to slap a computer together, but i still had to wait that long. Anyways, after i got the computer I did not get a chance to use it within the first few weeks due to me being away for that period of time. When i finally got home and had a chance to hook it up i was quick to find out that it wasnt working correctly. So i called Dell support to try and work out the problems. The CD/DVD player wasnt working, and for some reason the computer would not let me stay connected to the internet.

So first off, i had to pay an extra$136.75 to my already existing warranty program just so i could speak to someone from north america so i could understand what they were saying. After spending about 50 min. on the phone with a technician and him not being able to figure out why the cd player wasnt working, he had me take the side of the tower apart. And to my surprise they didnt even have the cd drive hooked up to the mother board. So after i had to fix my BRAND NEW computer just to play a cd, we tried to tackle the internet problem.

Well after spending another hour and a half on the phone with the dell tech. He could not figure out why its kicking me off. Turned off the firewall, anti-virus, tried everything. And its not my internet because it works on my other computers.

So i contacted dell again to try and return the computer, but they wont do it because it wasnt within their 21 day return period. So now im stuck with a computer that wont allow me to access the internet and did not initially have the cd player installed correctly until i had to do it. So beware of dell and their horribly failing company and products. hopefully none of you will have these problems, but im just letting you all know.......think twice before you buy a dell.

well im glad it worked out for you, i have always been satisfied with dell......before now. The thing that really makes me sour about it is......they wont do anything to help me now, except sit on the phone with them for hours trying to fix it. Its something i shouldnt have to do with a brand new computer. But maybe im just overreacting.

I have hated Dell with a passion since maybe 95'? I refuse to buy Dell. I dont like them and you can only use Dell parts in them. Some even have a special damn key to open the case.

The only problem I have with my new Dell is that it is a 64 bit browser and it won't install adobe flash player until adobe gets the 64 bit thing right. i cant watch videos on you tube with a 64 bit browser.
anyone know how to downgrade to the 32 bit browser?

Man that sucks.
Right now im using my dell dimension E310(4 years old) only problem I have had with it is if I want to burn a cd(the colored ones blue, red, black, yellow) it will only burn on the black ones. I have no idea why. Then I got a HP compaq 6715b and it will throw its fits like if a page is loading and I open a new one it will just shut off then once restarted it will say the system has recovered from a serious error. Other than that I am happy with my Dell and my HP.

Nothing really good or bad about them to say. Im running a Dimension 4500. The funny thing about tech support in general, is its sourced out to India. They put a India person on the phone that claims to speak english, the individual might, but they don't understand slang. Its bad enough trying to understand what they are saying, but as soon as you say, "WUZ UP" or "Yea, this thing just went down under on me", You just then totally confused the F#ck out of them:D . The only english they understand is dictionary english. Now imagine a city hood brotha trying to call tech support, that will go nowhere in a hurry! DOWN WITH THE INDIA CALL CENTERS!!!:cuss:

One positive I had with PC's. I once had a Compaq and had a modem fry on me. Tech support was great and they actually sent a guy out to replace the modem free of charge. Not under warranty either!

Build one yourself. It's much easier than you would thing. You pay less than half as much and the only thing you don't get is a ****ty warranty that doesn't cover anything.

I was just about to suggest that same thing. You can build a nasty machine that has 10 times better parts than anything you can buy off the shelf if you just do it yourself. All in all a computer is simple plug and play. The major computer makers so called "customize" feature is the biggest load of BS I have ever heard. But as far a Dell quality goes I have never had a problem with any of the products from them. I'm on a Dell Latitude laptop typing this reply and never had a problem with it.

you need a 32 bit computer. 64 bits means you have a 64 bit processor everything has to be 64 bit to work. Wanting to install a 32 bit browser thats like trying to install a 250ex head on a 400ex

Most of the stuff is backwards compatible... you shouldn't have a problem installing most 32bit software and if you do there is probably a 64bit alternative. I rarely run into issues.

There's something besides Firefox  That's always the first thing I do is install Mozilla when I build a new computer. The only thing IE is good for is...well nothing that I can think of.

This is a great alternative for some people, but most it is not since they wouldn't know what most of the parts do, much less on what the warning signs of a failure are. When the parts do fail YOU are your own tech and YOU have to go get the parts. With OEM equipment manufacturers this is a less painful process, it's still painful but a lot less. I'll have to show you some pictures of the last time my parents tried to work on their PC. The case was all bent outta shape and components were cracked...it was bad.

Never hurts to get online and do a little research. I manned a whole high school of 400 computers, and a database server with no knowledge. Most people are just too lazy to read up on some stuff. It's really not that hard. I didn't have someone show me how to do it. If I can self teach myself, then anyone can lol

Lenovo's are awesome laptops. I've had three over the years and liked them WAY better than my Dells that I have had.

Apple doesn't integrate with a lot of business software out there. Also, until Apple starts allowing people to load their OS on machines other than what Apple builds they won't be in the business sector like they have the potential of being.

I have a compaq desktop. It was slow and has pops-up everyone, all this uesless software installed. I tried to get rid of the crap, I only could get ~1/2. I brought it to a computer shop, they got rid of the all the crap and it ran 1,000,000 times better.

Some time later, something starting happening and some keys on the keboard stopped working, called compaq and they said to send it in. Turned out to be a problem with some of the keyboards on a certain # of machines. I got it back in 2 weeks, all the garbage was back on it, loaded with spyware. I called them about it, they said they have to install all this useless crap to ease it use and since I removed it, they had to put it back. I told them, I removed it because it made the computer run like crap, pop-ups everywhere and all that stuff was extremely annoying, now I have to pay the computer place to remove all this crap again. They said that they would give a discount if I wanted buy another from them. The computer place removed all the crap again and it turned out that compaq put more on this time. I'll never buy a big company computer.

The place told me of a general warning to owners of the big company computers, they use the cheapest stuff they can and they showed me an add from dell recently and an add of theirs 2 years ago. It turns out the computer place used the same processor(2 years) the the big company uses now and it looked it up on-line and it turns out that the processor that dell uses is scheduled to be soon discontinued and is now heavy discounted. Most of the computer that the "big places" build have the audio, video, modem, network and controller cards built onto the main board and once they go, its impossible to fix them. Also, if you want to upgrade the memeory, say its 100mb and you want 200mb, the big places uses 2 50 mb chips(they are cheaper, 2 50mb chips cost less than one 100mb chip). So now if you want to upgrade the memory, you have to buy 2 matching chips instead of one chip to match the old ones size. The big companies just give a desription of the parts they use, when analyzed, they are slower than easily available and current parts, also most the of the drives the big places use are on the "heavy discounted, soon discontinued" list. The computer place gives you all the books, disk's, etc for the hardware and I looked to see if its on that status, it wasn't. Now I realize some of this might be the computer place talking crap about competition and overexagerating some. My own experiences with a compaq verify most of what they said.

That's why if you do buy a ready made computer you ALWAYS make sure nothing that is common to crap out is integrated into the motherboard. Cuts cost to build and makes the uninformed consumer buy a new one when the old one takes a dump. It's a win win situation for the computer makers.

Most of the problems with new computers isn't the computer or manufacturer. It's the POS Vista they load on it. Nothing but problems and no true fixes for the bugs it has. It's much slower starting up and shutting down. It's really just a different version of XP, one that IS NOT stable. Your best bet is to get rid of Vista and go with XP. All the money Microsoft has spent on recent commercials praising Vista is for one thing....TO CHANGE PEOPLE'S OPINION ON THEIR CRAPPY OS.

It wasn't the commercials that lead me to believe it is full of problems. It's my degree in Computer Science that tells me this. You may not have problems with it. But if you knew the actual inner workings you would see why I have the view I do. I was able to see the OS about a year before it was released. By Microsoft's own admittance it was released too early.

I have been building my own desktops now for the past 6 years and it is the only way to go. I worked at a computer store 3 years ago and bought a computer that was on sale + my discount + a rebate for like $150 bucks. I'm using that computer right now and it still works beautifully and is plenty fast for any normal internet searching/office applications.

My $1400 gaming system I just built about a year ago is a different story. It is still about as good as it gets.

I have 3 laptops... 2 Compaq's and one new HP. The new HP laptops are having major overheating issues. Sometimes it works for days and sometimes after using it 5mins it will just shut off. HP doesn't care though... My older Compaq's run everything I need to do on a laptop, basically just homework and searching on the net... and I have never had a single problem with them.

I erase Vista and still use Windows XP Pro on all of my computers.

As for Dells- I have never had any major issues with them. My dad still buys and uses Dell computers and any time he has ever had a problem Dell has sent someone out and fixed it at our house. I still have a Dell 1.0ghz from like 10 years ago sitting in my closet that still runs strong on all original parts.

Honestly, your computer probably just has a bad network card. Go buy a new one for less than 10 bucks... its not the end of the world but I do think that Dell should have better customer service than that. That is ridiculous!! They should be sending you a new one.

You're comparing Apple to Windows. Apple is a WHOLE different story when it comes to price. They have no competitors. Nothing else can run the Mac operating systems besides Apple. That is why they are 3k in price.

As for your XPS. You bought it from a school. Not everyone has the luxury of getting discounts from school. So I'm ruling out that as a possibility.

Oh and you can put apples OSX system on any computer. that is why apples are pointless because it is there OP is why they dont get viruses

I have a macbook pro that I do video editing and photo editing on for my aunts photography business. I love it a lot. I'm really glad I have it. It's just convenient to have a MS OS for my actual work.

http://promos.asus.com/US/eblast/G50Vt_NVIDIA/index.html There is the laptop I have. It says DDR2 ram, but I upgraded to DDR3 with what I saved when it was on sale. It cost me about the same as the 949 dollar price.

And yes you can put OSX on windows machines, but reliability is iffy. So I would stick to putting OSX on Macs, and stay away from windows.

Dell XPS (http://www.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx/xpsnb_m1530?c=us&cs=19&l=en&ref=lthp&s=dhs)

Just to back my point a little bit, as you can see on the link... The $900 XPS is .26GHz slower, 1GB ram less, and a weaker video card. Hell even the highest priced on on that list has a weaker vid card, and same amount of ram and exceeds the ASUS by $300.
