A-Arm Question

This may be a silly question, but here goes.

I understand the nomenclature of +2/+1 A-Arms. But when the +2 refers to the width, is that an additional 2" total, or 2" per side increase? If I got +2 with A-Arms, would a 2" extended axle match up well?

Also, for general woods, trail, etc riding on my '88 250r, would I see any benefit from a +1 forward?
