I want to paint my engine but I don't know how stout the paint has to be.

What kind of temps to EX engines put out? Found some sweet paint that claims 500 degrees...will it work?

Thanks
sg

I think 500 is fine for the side cases but the head and that I think your going to need a higher temp rating.

High temp ceramic paint holds up great. It claims it's good until 1200 degrees, more than enough to survive EX's cylinder head temps.

I personally would not paint an air cooled engine, it could retain heat and cause the engine to run hotter than intended.

I cant remember ever seeing a manufacturer paint an air cooled engine

Blaster engines are black.

i'm not trying to steal this thread, but what is the normal running engine temp for a 400ex?

mine runs right around 200 to 220 F for oil temps. maybe 230 or 240 at the most. I have never had it up higher than that as far as I know. How about the rest of you guys.

mine runs at 250 to 270 F and my jetting is actually on the rich side.

^ that seems a little high

it does to me too, it only started running hot like that after i adjusted my valves. They were way out of spec. and now they're in spec (intake- .004, exhaust-.005) and it runs around 263 F according to my dad's infared temp. gauge.

I have an oil temp gauge coming so I'll be able to see where mine runs. I added an additional oil cooler that made a big difference in performance however I don't have a baseline temperature to compare it to. I'm curious to see what the run temp is and post it up.

Cmon, anyone else, you guys have to know what they run. I am still wondering cause three or four is not enough for a good average temp. Help us out here. Thanks alot guys, steve

buy me a temp dipstick and i'll let you know. I know mine is most likely above a lot of others when the air temperature is near 100 degrees in the sand and racing it around. Its jetted perfect and has a colder plug though.

the blaster engine is far from the heat a 400ex will put out, and the "paint" they use is a air cooled motor paint, the old suzuki rm125 dirtbike i had had a painted motor too but that proved to cause problems and they no longer paint them and they are liquid cooled now anyhow. its never a good idea to paint a motor with your average paint, corrosion moisture and heat will destroy your motor, they look sweet polished to a mirror finish thow, but some pro builders will recommend against that too cause the bumpy surface dissipates heat faster and more efficiently.

According to my trailtech comp my temps range from about 200 to 290. When I am running at decent speeds it drops down to about 220 but as soon as I slow way down or stop it jumps way up. 280 some what worries me but then I remember I used to run my shifter kart at 320 or so. What do you guys think?

that seems HIGH to me but i guess each motor is different. steve

I talked to the local honda guys after i went riding the other day and it jumped up to 400 (yes 400!) and he said i should not be concerned about that kind of temp right under the plug because it is so close to the combustion chamber. What do you guys think? i am still very concerned.....would it be a good idea for be to get a oil temp dipstick to see what that is at?

it is fine at the chamber but if the whole cylinder is that hot it wont be lasting too long. the oil temps are what i talk about, you should be around 200-240 at the base gasket also. that is a good place to look when measuring. steve

my 416 runs at around 260-280. When it was going through break in it got up to 310 but that was only for about ten minutes. i'm using an infared temp guage and getting the temp off of my cylinder and head

with the xr's only temp dipstick, mine's average is 200 oil temp...225-240 base gasket using the infrared thermometer...after running it at a decent clip for extended periods, the dipstick will read 240-255 and the infrared on the base gasket reads 260-280...hope this helps
just rebuilt it though to a 407, so maybe it'll cool off after its broke in...oh yea, just installed the sparks key too

with my oil temp gauge, in 60 degree weather, I was getting up to about 210 max. Thats on a slow trail. Plain stock. Im doing some headwork now, going to add a timing key and a few other things. i'll post up some temps then.

With my XR's Only dipstick I am usually between 210-240
