can i just take off the parking brake or do i have to do something special

There is a special block off part that you'll need. You can get them anywhere. It bolts in to where you pulled the brake mechanism off. I believe Modquad makes one that's pretty decent looking.

you'll risk getting dirt in the caliper, which will ruin seals and possibly alter brake performance.

You end up getting a bunch of crap where it not suposed to be. Check out rocky mountain they have good deals.
