is the black cover that says brp the factory case saver? i didn't realize how important they are.

Nope that is just the sprocket cover, the case saver is the ally part that is bolted to the casing under the black plastic cover... it is really important to keep it on..!!!!

how well does it work? would i be better off buying an aftermarket one or would the factory hold up? my buddies chain broke and really damaged his case. i don't want the same to happen to me.

Not sure which is the best but i use stock and no problems yet..!! Either would be fine...
