i see most steering stems have nuts but it looks like this one takes a bolt of some sort it has female threads. anyone have an idea what this bolt looks like and where to get it?

It uses an allen bolt with a washer, like this one. I would take it to a specialty hardware store who sell metric bolts. I think NAPA may carry them as well.

i actually can get those at work. i thought that was all i needed but wanted to make sure it wasnt some specially made bolt...

90% Sure that's a Laeger stem - built for narrow frames. If you don't have a narrow frame, you should consider selling it and get a standard bolt as it holds stronger. I'd be interested in it.

That design is because the narrow tubes make it hard to put a regular style nut on.

Thats just like my Laeger stem! It does not matter if its a narrow frame or not! Thats how all the Laegers I have had in the past are designed.
