I have an 86' frame with an 89' swing arm that I am rebuilding. It is going to be a long term project.

I have not ridden this set up but I got the frame from a friend of mine. He ran this frame and swing arm for a while. He said that using this set up over his original swing arm gave the atv much better traction. He could stand it up when ever he wanted, even with a full 4 gallon tank. I think it is about 1" shorter than the 86 swing arm.

You might check the sticky at the top of the forum and look up the 450r swingarm swap. There are a lot of pages to sort through but there is some great information. The nice part about that swap is its very easy to get parts for. If i didnt already have a RPM swinger on my 88, i would do the 450r swap

get an aftermarket one thats the 88 length or -1, i would say -2 would be as far as you want to go. but all in all the 86 swinger blows a big hairy one. you could have the stock one shortened also if you want to go down that rout.

Go with a swinger thats the 88/89 length.

I wouldn't go any shorter than that unless your running TT.

If you get a 88/89 swingarm, make sure you have the rear motor mounts tabs welded on the bottom frame rail.

Why is everyone suggesting a shorter swing arm? I would suggest the 450 swing arm conversion it will retain the 86, 87 length which is nice for everything except MX & TT. The length is beneficial for traction and helps keep the front end down.

The 88/89 length swinger handles the best! I've had an 87 and my 05LSR at the same time and could tell the difference when switching between the two. I did like the 87 length in long whooped out runs.
