I bought a new 400ex recently and don't really want to mess with this anymore. the one in the pic is 100% complete. It's got spark and 145psi which is a tad low, but should be OK. Anyway, it won't run - I took the rocker cover off and the cam and valves look good. It's got to be a timing issue. It will backfire if I spray it. It's not getting fuel or maybe not at the correct time.
I have a complete 2nd motor including stator, but it has a bad head due to the cam wearing the journals. It included the stator which was going to be my next swap. I have a 3rd head that is included as well
I also have a complete 2nd frame with 2 sets of a-arms, all 3 shocks, rotor, hubs, spindles, air boxes, foot pegs, swingarm, another carb, 3 seats, and pipe. I think pretty much everything except the, axle, wheels, tires, tank, and plastic.
Anyway, I think it would be a good quad to fix and probably an easy fix, but I lost interest.
