My 2006 that was seriously like new...still had the t!ts on the tires and no paint rubbed off the frame in the heal area or even the a-arms with Pro Armor nerf bars with heal guards and full skid plates ran me 3200. This one is nice but looks a little on the high side.

You say you want it stock to build your way right? If you picked one up done already, you can still do it your way, but now you have some aftermarket parts to sell off and make some of the cash back. Its expensive to build a quad nicely, unless you pick it up partly done, or buy alot of used parts as I did on my 450r. I did my 416ex up with all brand new stuff, I have over 15000$ in the 416ex. It handles great and anyone can ride it since the 400's can be mild or wild depends how you want to ride it.
Now my R has just over 10,000$ in it and it handles better than the 416ex now, and has much more power on just HRC and full sparks exhaust, and uni filter. The R doesn't like to go slow though its always balls to wall. That is the 04-05 HRC cam that makes it that way though. So if you want it more mild i'd go with a hc or crf cam. Then you can play with gearing.
Again this is just all my opinion
