well ive been thinking about getting a 400ex for awhile. i dot alot of trail riding and there is alot of mud i would like to know the pros and cons form you 400 guys/girls. what do you guys/girls think of a 440 kit for it does it kill the reliabilty? thats my main goal i really dont ant to break dont 2-3 hours from the truck in the woods. but i do like to go fast. i thought about a 4x4 but i still want to hit the pits some times too. ive been consitereding a few diff quads also like the z400 and the predator

thanks

do a 416 kit, 440s can be reliable but they can also not be reliable. The 11:1 416 kit is going to be just as fast and much more reliable.

You don't want a z400.. I was goin to, but once you ride one they handle crappy compared to the EX. The throttle response and everything is totally different. They just didn't feel comfortable with me. Plus if you get the yellow they look like highlighters rolling around. :D

If you are planning on doing the 440 big bore than why don't you just buy a 450R.

The only thing I found good about the Z400 was that I could do wheelies easier on it than my 400. Might be because of the low end power difference.

Yeah, like when i raced my buddy his would do wheelies in 1st and 2nd no prob. But like rolling through the trails you had to be on and off the clutch so much or it would die. Only thing I like about the z's is they come with better stock suspension.

Your EX wont do wheelies in 1st or second without a problem? It must be REAL tired

if i got a new quad i'd go with the yfz450 man. they're great all around quads and a ton of fun on trails. plus you can pick them up pretty cheap right now. i've seen 2009's for $4,999.00 otd

can a 450r or any 450 take the abuse a 400ex can? im just worried that i might kill it when i take her in the mud other wise i would get a 450

as long as you take care of the 450's just the same as you would a 400ex you should be fine. if you go with the trx 450r you'll need to lower the gearing for trail riding. otherwise you'll be working the clutch all day long.

and what's your price range?

word, 400ex is one of the easiest quads to wheelie. You can ride one with even just a pipe 5th gear pegged in a wheelie.

Between the z400, 400ex, and predator if your keeping them stock I would go predator. If modding I would go z400 cause its liquid cooled. But I would just get a used 450. The honda 450r's are the best 450 quad for trail riding mainly cause of the softer suspension and their taller so you dont feel cramped and their faster than a 440ex. If your looking for power a 400ex is not the quad.

The only thing about the 400ex is the seat latch pin will break or chip. Another thing is the head light whires end up rubbing the front break line mount and end up blowing the fuse when you turn the lights on.

Like I said on page 1.... I never said a 400ex couldn't......

id say get a raptor there less maintenance then a 450 more reliable faster then a 400ex and made for trails. the only thing is i would get bigger tires.

I loved my 400EX it was awesome. I only cammed, filtered and piped mine and it was plenty until I went to the dunes with my buddies. all of whom were smaller guys than me with larger cc-d quads. If you're not a big guy, I say get a newer 400EX. STAY AWAY FROM SOMEONE ELSES PROJECT BIKE THOUGH. Especially if this is your 1st 400EX. Buy as new as you can afford and as stock as possible.

I would stay away from the 660's though and find a 700r if you go over to Yamaha. The 700r's seem to be well built and very reliable.

im not small what so ever im 6'3 229.2 so maybe a 450r would be best?

Between a raptor660 and 400ex most people who drove them before would choose the 400ex.

yea from your word of mouth it really makes me believe this comment show prof if you going to discredit it and where in a 400ex forum of course everyone is going to say that go to a raptor forum and everyone will say the 400ex is a POS. In saying that i do agree the 700 was a much improvement but 660s are nice to as long as you get 02 and newer the 01 had tranny problems.

i would say stay away from 450s at that size at least the when i rode my friends 2009 yfz I felt crampt and i am 6ft 220. but on the trx450 i felt like i had a lot more room. the 450s are made for tracks not so much trails to so they tend to sit lower.

whatever you do if u want to do alot of trail riding dont get the raptor because its just like the 450r it doesnt like to be idled down because of the big bore, but a 400ex can because of the smaller engine plus u can wheelie eailier because of the weight differnce....i would also stay away from the polaris they are built cheap and hard to find aftermarket parts, but thats my opinion
