Boyessen makes a Rad valve boot for the 38mm carb.

I could be wrong but it may depend on what type of riding you're doing. I have a 36 pwk, and so far I like it. I was going to change to a 39 A/S, but I was told I would lose bottom end. So, I stayed with what I have. I mainly ride in the open, some trails and it works great.

I have the 36mm PJ mated to a Rad Valve. Excellent from the bottom and in mid-range. I ride just about everything and it works well just about everywhere. Could use some top end for those bean field sprints! But I am very happy with the 36.

if you have a porting that is for good low to mid the 38mm pj will work really well. although its a larger dia. carb it still has plenty of bottem pull. to help it a bit i'd run the compression up.
