So 13/39 is the stock gearing?

I have been running what my quad came with- 13/37.

I just came across a nearly new 41 tooth rear sprocket in my parts box and was thinking of trying it out.

Is anyone running this? Too low?

I run mostly woods and the 37 seems a little on the high side in some spots.

what size tires are you running on the back? This makes a big difference too.
I ran a 13/39 combo with my Razr 2 tires which are 22 inch tires. It was perfect for woods riding. When I put my turf tamers on, which were 18 inch tires, I had to change it to a 13/37 because the 13/39 had way to much low end and not enough top end.

it depends how much motor you got. i ran 13-39 on my310 with 20" razr 1s and it was good. ran a similar setup on my 330 and it was even better.

I, myself, would go with the stock gearing. That is just my personal preference. It is a good all around combo. You may like something different though. If you change one tooth on the front sprocket then it is like changing almost 3 teeth on the back sprocket so keep this in mind if you want to make a dramatic change. You could buy a 14 front tooth and run the 37 you have on the back and it would be almost like a 13/40.

If he was to go with a 14/37 his gearing would be high= for more top end. Which wouldn't be even close to a 13/40.

Going up in the front= more top end going up in the rear= more lowend.

your probably right. I was thinking I had that right but I'm to foggy headed right now to think about gearing. I got this flu crap that is going around so it's a little hard to think right now.

My engine is 295cc.

I'll try this 13/41. I"m riding east coast tight woods stuff- its all about 2/3/4 gear. I think this will turn my 1st into a granny gear but it might create some sweet spots in those other gears. I could count on one the number of times I shifted this thing into 6th gear over the last 6 months.

On my WR250F dirt bike it came 13/52 and i also ran 13/48, 14/48, and on some dual sport outings a 14/45. I recall going from 13/52 - 14/48 being like adding or subtracting one gear from the trans, moving it from the bottom to top or vice versa. That's going from a final rate of 4:1 to like about 3.5:1.

13/37 is @ 2.85:1, 13/39 is @ 3:1, and 13/41 is @ 3.15:1

14/37 would be 2.64:1- super high gearing

14/41 would be 2.92:1- good for chain life I guess and close to stock.

I ran 14/39 w/ 20" tires in the woods, plenty of low end, 1st and 2nd gear were almost useless, most of the riding was in 3rd+. I use 14/36 on my atc250r, 295 pv motor and 18" tires, it pulls 2nd starts easy and alot of the riding is 3rd-5th, 6th is rarely used, I can't think of many tracks where its open enough for 6th. Your motor characteristics depend alot also, a top end motor will like lower gearing better, a bottom end motor will be able to pull higher gearing with ease. The top end motor can too, but it will feel like a light switch with higher gearing and won't be able to pull it from the bottom.

try 14/41/ the bigger the sprockets, the longer your chain will last.

if you'll run the 14/41 you'll be plenty happy with it. :D

yeah, but I need a longer chain. I had an extra chain but it must be from 88/89. Mine is an 86 and the other chain was 2 links too short. My current chain is about 1 link too short. What # of links for 14/41 on an 86/87 swinger?

Ended up going with 13/39. Also made one small adjustment to the carb set up.

WOW- this thing has power, power and more power. Those two teeth out in the woods help it get on the pipe instantly! I have been playing around with this machine for about 6 months and I can finally say that it runs world class, I mean this thing can go head to head with anything out there, old or new.

Thanks for all the tips and feedback. Now I hope I can just keep the rubber side down so I don't break up the quad or worse yet- myself! :eek2:
