Stock Shock question

Anyone have an easy (safe) way to get the springs off of stock shocks? I'd like to paint them.

You need to compress the shock spring and pull the I think its called C clip out. I done it a bunch of times to tcs, pep, and yfz 450 shocks before but could never get the 400ex springs off by hand. I just twisted the pre load as far up (400ex down) as it could go and then always put the top of the shock against my stomach and pulled back on the springs up and then flicked the bottom out.

The springs on the 400ex will need a shock spring compressor or something that works like one at less your super strong because I couldn't do it.
