my 87 TRX250x Build Thread

so i picked this up from a friend for 500 bux,needed some work.
when i first got it,the clutch was shot,replaced the clutch,and it rides great.
then i found out the other problem,he removed the case saver,and before he sold it to me,it cracked the side case.
so ive got another decent sidecover on it now,with some JB weld,and the leaks are gone.
got new front&rear sprockets,chain,rear axle bearings(for double row LSR carrier),new sprocket bolts,seat cover,new spark plug,grips,etc.
im planning on doing a full motor rebuild over the next winter,and when i do it,id like to build the motor up for some fun(like a porting job,maybe a hotcam),etc,ill buy an exhaust and jet kit,i want this thing to be FUN and fast.
so if anyone can give me some advice on making a good stout,rebuilt engine,gimme some pointers,i work in automotive for a living,fixing cars,so i can work on engines very well,and ive done my fair share of quads/bike engine rebuilds,so this doesnt seem too bad to me.

man your gonna love this thing. I love mine, I'll never sell it for that reason. I like your ideas, a hotcam would really open up that motor along with a high comp piston. keep us posted.:cool:

I think they are great bikes! cheap to buy/build and fun as hell! I got an 87' that has 12:1 motor, plenty of power. I didn't do the work, the previous owner did, not too sure of the cam either but it rips.

got some stuff done yesterday,painted the frame black with some rustoleum,cleaned the motor,primed it,painted it high heat silver that looks original,painted the exhaust high heat black,painted the bars and grab bar red,i even painted the plastics,prepped em,put some adhesion promoter on,then primed em,sprayed em black with some krylon fusion.
i ordered a new stator cover gasket,waiting for that to come in the mail,put on a chain roller,lubed the chain with chain wax,etc.
im planning on either rebuilding the current motor,or rebuilding another motor for this thing.
i plan to do the usual,piston/rings,probably std bore pro x piston and rings,cometic gasket set,get the head ported,get a valve job done,some new valves to while im in there,a stage 1 hotcam,get a jet kit,replace the exhaust,not to sure if im going to change the filter,since it has a K&N,ill get the cylinder decked,to make sure its flat,so it seals real nice,head milled maybe a little bit,i really want to make this thing rip,not like having a stroker kit,but still,i enjoy building things,and this is what ive come up with so far.

lets see some pics of the progress! I'm interested in see how the painted plastic's hold up? I thought about cuttin mine and painting them but wasn't sure......

well,took some pics,lemme know what you guys think,i ran some seafoam down the carb today,smoked for like 1/2 the day,and it rides like a bat outta hell now,much quicker,guess their musta been alot of carbon buildup in the motor.

todays progress:i rode the quad around a bit,and i finally decided im going to start the rebuild on the motor,so i took it for one long spin,and pulled the motor out,and the motor is sitting in my basement on my workbench.
im probably going to get a .20 over weisco piston kit,cometic gaskets,get an fmf exhaust,get a dynojet kit,and finish her up,i just wanna wake her up a bit.

ordered STD bore 12:1 Weisco Piston&rings,Cometic Top End Gasket Set,DG Exhaust(Slip On),Scorpion SS Header Pipe,painted the frame red,gunna repaint the a arms,swingarm a black color.
ill take pictures of the motor as it progresses.

Where did you get your 12:1 Weisco Piston? I am looking to order the same thing. My 87 250X is all torn apart right now awaiting a hot cam, Weisco piston, and new rockers after the stock cam bearing came apart. I can't seem to find a Weisco piston except directly from Weisco.

my left rear fender cracked in the same exact place. right next to the seat. it is getting bigger but i guess my buddy knows a guy who has a plastic welder. is this a common crack on ex's?

mine did that on both sides, then another little one in the middle of the left fender. one day, i jumped a little extra high, with no landing ramp, and a giant square fell off! WTF!!!
