artice in dirtwheels says...

the latest word from service honda is the 2stroke, cr250 powered quad is almost though the testing phase of the project. we snuck into fmf dyno room and snapped a few photos tho show you guyz what this thing is all about. it appears that service honda is doin a cery sano job with mounting the motor raiator and kick starter. it kicks forward (like a 250r)the motor will use a 38mm keihin carb and the goal is for it to have a broad power-band topping, out in the 38-40 range. the machine will be nearly 60lbs ligheter than a 400ex. impressive. stay stuned right here for the latest word.

thats the artice... they ahve pics of it also and i can say one word... BAD@$$!!!!

i see a fmf pipe, black frame, yellow plastic, custom graphics sorta like the 02 model 400ex, aftermarket bars,

i'll scan a pic later

Here are the only 2 concerns I have with this quad: 1.) a non-counterbalanced 2-stroke in a stock frame and 2.)an $8000 price tag on a stock suspended EX. You'd be better off buying yourself a $3000 used EX and doing a counter-balanced 2-stroke conversion with aftermarket suspension and still be cheaper than than ServiceHonda's with a smoother powerplant.

Thanks a lot Mr. Wet Blanket......:o

Guy you know people WILL NEVER pay 8000.00 for a high performance sport quad! What are you on, man?:D

I'm retarded for spending a little more than $6000 on my aluminum frame, EFI, Ohlins suspension and a warranty. Definitely overpriced. It's only a smart to buy this one cause it says "Honda" on it. Even though you're getting a stock EX frame and shocks it's well worth the $8000. I'm hearing a credit card commercial in my head now:

Used 400EX in good condition-$3000
Rebuilt 250R powerplant from eBay-$1500
Buying the servicehonda version for nearly twice as much as you could build it yourself-lunacy

:D:D:D:D

its not suppsoe to vibrate much at all

used 400ex=3,000
cr 250 motor= 1,500
pipe and all other stuff needed=500-1500

the 400 and cr motor probaly need some lil things=500

wiring and carb?=300

kick starter mod, as well as the billet covers it looks like it has=500

realizing ur way over your head=insanity

id buy the one professionally built for 8

Any body notice this, a stock cr250 puts out 45HP, they say they have 38-40HP with a pipe. They are losing several HP somewhere.....think it might have a couterbalancer????

im not sure about that ^, but i sure think it is a bit high of a price tag! i would rather put a yz engine or crf in my frame

you guys are forgetting about one thing. the frame. that frame isn't "stock". i'm sure they just didn't throw a engine in there, having it perfectly fit with no vibration and taking it for a test ride. they probably had mess around with the frame, have it gussested(sp?)and add parts and stuff to make it not vibrate and have it fit right. i'm sure that wasn't expensive but probably took some research money. i'll say 100 to gussest and add parts to make fit. add another 2g cause they are going to use new 400EX's not used 3g ones. i added up freerides' calculations plus mine come to 8,400. they probably got discounts on the pipe and bars and stuff. which would take it just about 8. your actually getting a good deal i think and to have it professionoly done. they probably made it 8 starting to get out of debt from making it and research debts. they probably need a lot of money to get them started and then they'll drop the price. you know how it works...a new quad comes out, it's high price, after a couple months it goes down 500 or something and keeps dropping every 6 months for a while. look at the 400EX. it went from 5899 to 4899. that took a while but it will eventually drop i think.

If it's a CR powerplant than it doesn't come counterbalanced. And if they are only getting 38-40hp than there's something wrong.

im sure it makes 38-40hp at the wheels, and since quads have 2 biger heavir tires i think that might deduct some...

12-24-2002, 11:48 PM
This is pretty interesting and I will deff keep an eye on it to see how it all plays out but if they want to get more than just a curious interest from me they need to be thinking CRF450 motor and not detuned to death either.

Now if I could only convince Jeff and Marty at the quad shop to cut the price in half on their CRF :)

i know that the CR dosen't have a counterbalancer. What i mean is think they might have added a counterbalancer. From what i've read, Honda is supplying the parts to change the kick start to forward kick and they might also be supplying the parts for a counterbalancer. Just a thought.
