I have a pair of used rear American Racer SD38's on Douglas .190 red label wheels, 4x110. They have around 60% tread. Grooved and siped. I have pics in the "for sale" section.

Its when you make thin cut lines in the tire to give it more edges to get traction.

Although sipping DOES indeed give the tire more 90 degree edges to bite on, the spread or fold of the tread from a sipe doesn’t usually allow significant ground to be gathered or bit on to create any substantial forward bite (to speak of). They are used more so to either generate (side to side) or dissipate (circumferentially) heat in the tire. The extra heat generation in itself, generally creates the extra forward bite that’s noticed.

Sorry for the somewhat technical explanation, but I find myself having to explain this concept more and more. Which usually leads to what kind of grooving is better, and for what track conditions. Which is a completely different topic!!
