I am in the process of narrowing down my choices.. Anything I should know about an 06 outlaw? Should I pony up and go with the 09? it is substantially more so the benefits have to severly outweigh and so you know, the KTM motor is nice i know, but not 2k nice.

I ride about 6-8x per year, all day events. Trails only. I need something that rips, but gets there in a non banshee type fashion.

Let me know if I should avoid this year.. For example, 03 and below raptor have the transmission issues, anything similar?

I also didnt see anything for sale in the classifieds, anyone selling?

There's a bunch on ebay. You should be able to get a 06 near new or even new there and a lot cheaper. There a solid platform and I raced one and had no big issues.

The 06 has IRS and the 500cc motor.. selling for $3500 they have an 07 with IRS for 4k.. This is out the door.

Is the KTM engine worth the $500 extra? I am already pushing it a bit at 3500, but.. I hate buyers remorse.

This needs to be a once and done deal, needs to last about 7-8 years.

i have the 500 and i am happy with it but if i had a choice between the 500 and 525 and was only a 500 dollar dif i would for sure take the 525 hands down.

Even if the 525 is used vs the 06 new?

Hmmm... used vs. new, i would say that is ur call and ur call alone. With these types of bikes it's hard to tell how many miles have been put on them, and how hard the bike has been abused.

Yes the 525 is well worth the $500 more. Think of it this way, you will put on a pipe/filter and rejet the 500 and eat up that $500, but it will still not be as fast as a stock 525.

On the used 525 does it already have some aftermarket options on it?

The used has all stock components (what I want)... The dealer does repos, sells hundreds each month and has a great seller rating. I reached out to others who bought and they are very happy.

The tires are still stock with 80% tread, so hard to tell how many hours.. not much I would think. Also no boot marks near the pegs, everything looks decent from the pics. Plastics are not scratched.

To the person selling, I looked on the columbus CL.. its a 500 for 4k. I can get new 06 for 4k even out the door.. sorry but you price is to high in this market.

I bought a used 06 Outlaw 500 last week for $2700. It had nerf bars and was in good condition. There where some wear marks near the foot pegs and the tires have about 40% left so it has been used. But for that price I was able to buy new tires and rims and still keep the price under $3100.

I wanted the 500 engine because Polaris has been selling it for longer and I felt more comfortable with the reliability. Not that the 525 is not reliable, I just was not aware of the history of the 525 and the 500 was also a great deal.

Used vs New is a tough decision, they do depreciate fast but it is nice to know exactly what you are getting.

I figure I will be working on a new or used one so if the used looks good and is a good price, I would rather buy used and not take the depreciation hit. I also found an on line service manual for $6.99, I figure with that I can do most repairs.

I agree with the 500 being around for longer and I have never owned new from a toy perspective.. .

Plus, even though it would take 1k to get a 500 engine bored, ported, polished, cam,and pipe, it wont be for a long time.

Also, i read that as soon as you get the 500, you rejet and filter.. main to 165 and 2 turns on the idle screw... Supposed to really wake it up. So after i get bored with it, then I will go that route.

tough decision, but I really like new. All recalls performed, warranty, unmolested.

I hate buyers remorse, but I havent even ridden anything over my worked 300. I think the 500 is very fast, and should be adequate. my 300 keeps up with stock 400's, and the 500 is a bit more. So it should provide a nice jump in power.

dbc112,

Take it from me, shop around for a decent 525. You'll get more power, less weight, AND more potential from the motor. You may be able to find one new 'old stock' for less than you may think. If you know what to look for, you may find one that's used but basically new for dirt cheap. That's what I did. Saved $2000

Go for the 525!!

This forum is full of people asking for opinions on the 500 vs 525, and the response is always "Get the 525".

The fourm has tons of people that have owned both 500 and 525 machines. Take it from us, get the 525!
Even if there is a 10% premium on the 525vs500, it is completely worth it.

You will not be let down, and if you get the 500 you will wonder "What if".......

I know.. the what if...

I am saying used vs new I know the 525 is an awesome powerplant

I have heard KTM motors must be cares for such as valve adjustments and oil changes.. guess it depends how good the used one was taken care of.. being a repo, then I have no history except that it checked out by the sellers mechanic. He does sell lots of these but still. The tires are original with 80% tread so that could tell some history.

So it is down to a crap shoot on the used.. so the question is not the money, but the used factor.

The valve adjustment on the KTM is 10 times easier than the Fuji.
Also, just about all the KTM guys run Rotella oil. The stuff you get for $12 a gallon at wal-mart or the parts store. At that price, you could change it every ride and still be ahead.

Understood... But are you adjusting the valves every 10 hours of ride time?

I have about 15 on mine, untill I notice some noise or running issues, I'll just leave them be.Now that I think about it, I might check them this weekend out of boredom :D

I finally got my 300 out on the trails where it opens up.. actually a lot of fun.. I cant imaging how a 500 would act.

Anyway, after riding today I decided 500 is plenty... More than enough.

I race a 08 525 in the IATVHSS and it has taken all the wrecks, flips, trees like a champ! I race this machine at the Heartland chaellege 10hr with two other female racers and this machine did not let me down! We took Second place in womens division.
The only work done to it is Colby from C&D racing revalved my shocks and it rides like a couch, nerf bars and FASST Flex bars.
