I have it down to basically 2 quads. I ride trails only. I love a great kick in the @ss when the tralil opens up. I want something that will grow with my ability and last a long time. I ride a total of 6x a year so i really want to avoid buyers remorse, or cost of ownership...

polaris outlaw 500 IRS
Or
400ex

Interested in some speed, both quads can give that. Honda wins in reliability.

but something about the outlaw and 500cc.. IRS (which I actually like). Just pulling me towards it.

Any other suggestions?

My current bike is potentially sold. The day I get the cash, I am headed to that online site you can buy quads eeee bay

Help me out.. any stories on the polaris, recalls? Issues I should be aware of?

I actually think the irs would be nice sometimes when you're just cruizing and not riding hard

For that much cash you could get a 400ex and get all the works.

i never considered these quads before my crash this fall but now being paralyzed ive been looking at the kfx 700, fully auto, shaft drive, good power, sportys and they been selling for 1500-2000 here used in godo shape , and i guess they stand up pretty well

The recall is a bit concerning but can be fixed with a quick trip down the street..

A friend of mine who was severely hurt in a car accident (2 years still recovering) drives a sportsman with IRS.. Works very well for him.

So i am now between the 06 and the 07. The 07 has the KTM engine for $500 more. I am stretching at $3500 already...

To bad i cant find one locally, could save some money. Anyone have a 07 outlaw 525 they are selling? i wont pay dealer price for it

My friend broke his back in right around theupper chest area. He went with the KFX700 also. He loves it because he doesnt have to shift it and plenty of power on tap!

Thanks for the offer.. I am dead set on the outlaw 500.. Found a NEW 06 for $3900. Screaming deal.. want new, always had used etc.

Curious, stock to stock. Outlaw will punish a 400ex correct?

Stock for stock, yes. Deffinately.

I still say that the Honda has reliablility on its side though!

Is that a serious price? Not trying to sound rude or mean, its a nice looking quad and has some goodies but for $3800 it seems pretty steep.

I found an 05 honda 400ex for $2500 bone stock low ride time. Still going outlaw.. very excited. 06 with IRS black with silver..

Also, had a good deal go through. Got a 6x7 trailer straight up for mine. I wanted larger for the longer trips and the trade wanted smaller for short trips.

ITS ALL COMING TOGETHER

If/when this deal goes through next week, you will hear me scream like a little girl.. That's right, I said it.

If you could hold out til you could get a model with the KTM motor, that would make it that much sweeter. And yes, stock for stock, predators and outlaws eat up a 400.

I actually have the option for a 525.. Seriously though, for me.. faster than a 400ex. thats fine.. at least I think

Also the 525 is a race inspired engine, will that mean more maintenance? I am looking for longevity and low maintenance, but, I want it all in a bike that can buck like a wild bull.. If i need more, than I go bore, pipe, etc.. could always happen years down the road.

Comming from a decently modified 300ex, I would think the 500 would be enough to scare me for awhile.. Dont you think?

I want low maintenance.. Dont mind wrenching, but I really want to go out and enjoy 8x a year. Set it into the garage, come back 4 weeks later (with battery tender of course and carb drained) and start it up again

Is the 525 that much better/faster? Night and day? Or are we talking 10 quad lenghts in 100 yard race...

416exfreak
02-19-2009, 06:44 PM
The 525 is substantially faster than the 500...

Its a completely different engine, that was designed to make a lot of power, where the 500cc polaris engine was designed to be a competitive trail engine more or less.

A 400ex like mine (no offense and not trying to start a fight) would walk all over a 500. A 525 would be a closer race.

Interesting..

So it comes down to this..

A used 07 525 IRS, or a NEW 06 500 IRS. One is for sale from someone who repos ATV's. Claims in good order, is a dealer actually but isnt local so I cant inspect other than pics. The 06 well... its unmolested and local.

From a trail not racing perspective, fast isnt everything.. I really just want either quad to be crazy quick if I feel the "need". I think the 500 would provide that agree? Enough torque for some hills etc.

I could always get a sprocket change which gets you to 50 mph in a hurry.. 75 to me, is just not going to happen. On my sport bike, it came and went is less than 4 seconds (purce insanity)... and the car, 60 comes up in 4.8. So I do have the need for something quick.

Also the mod route is inevitable in the future.

Both are fast quads... I keep hearing 525, 525, 525 from everyone... CRAP.. this is tough. I dont think I can go wrong either way..

I think this video answers my questions.. a stock 400ex will hang with my modded 300.

Ummm... No. I had a mean little 426ex and I had a guy on a predator with a pipe beat me in a drag race, and he had a girl on the back.

The KTM motor, while requiring more maintenance, and more costly to own, is an unbeatable motor in my opinion. When properly taken care of, they will last and last and last. I don't know about the difference as far as quad lengths of power in a drag race, but I know the 525 has more torque and power than the 500. If possible, go check out the 525 for yourself. See what you can tell about it.

Mine isnt a 426. And a straight line is not how I do work.

If its not on an MX track or through the woods, its not racing.

And that guy could probably ride better than you, and him having a peice of arse on the back gave him more traction.

More traction, more torque, better skills (possibly).

No wonder you lost.

Straight line racing= FAIL.

Price has been dropped.

You tried to prove me to be stupid, which was uncalled for. You didnt take into considerations the difference in the two quads, rider skill level, experiences, etc.

Im not going to argue with you. Im just telling you from first hand experience that my 440 will flat out stomp a 500.

The 525 is a MUCH closer race.

Im sorry if your 426 was slow, or that you can't ride.

Take your pick of the two and let this be done.

Hmmn.. Bill Ballance could race a stock 300ex and have no problem beating lesser riders on decked out bikes. Does than mean a 300ex is the fastest fourwheeler, no. A 400 punched out a 440 is a great bike. But still isn't going to hold a candle to an outlaw. I'm dropping it. Don't have time to argue with little boys with 400ex's. I've had 3 of them. I know what they are capable of and what they aren't. And don't question my riding ability. Or show up to the Florida GNCC and decide for yourself.

a 440 with some simple and free weight reduction work done will walk a 500, actually to go there and this is especially on an mx track the same weight reduction applied to a 406 will get the job done just dandy and that is from personal experience. displacement is not everything....

Nope, no hard feelings. First GNCC is River Ranch Florida. This Sunday. Second is Washington GA. Next Saturday. I would highly recommend going. Most fun racing there is.

A 450 and a predator is a good race. That being said your 400 will not touch it. You say you do all this mx but a 400ex will not do anything on a mx track unless it is properly set up. Not like your stocker. Good luck trying to be hard there little boy.

Lawling at the post Extreme quoted.

HondaRider11- I dont have to wish I had a 426 or a 416, because I have a 440. And I can assure you, its quite far from stock. It may not have elkas and the like, but those 450r shocks work just fine.

I guess I should wish I was like you and every other jackass who thinks the 400ex is a dead machine. Go get your mom and dad to buy you a 450 and deck it out, then come talk crap to the kid on the 440, that he worked his arse off to build.

I dont give a chit what you think man. Your not better than anyone, contrary to your beliefs. Sorry to bust your bubble.

agreed.

as far as the 500 vs the 525.. i went on a ride with both of them last summer. both had their ups and downs. in a drag, the 525 left both of us.. the 500 was a little better race for me.. still beat me :scary: :p . however, the 525 seemed to have some overheating problems and it didn't seem as manageable in the tighter sections. the 525 owner and i were in the creek for a large portion of the day trying to cool off our engines!
